re: It has "become common" for recruits to ask for $5,000 merely to visit a school’s campus.

Right. But it’s real damn strange for schools, like Ole Miss, that promise scholarship / NIL full rides. A scholarship is 4 years…an NIL offer and a PWO is well…something short of that IMO. I know your current kicker is the latter, and I know schools would love to do that for specialists…it’s just a different level of commitment. To me, that is ‘from the school’.

Let's have some fun with this. Do you realize that Higher Ed is 6.4% of a US GDP of over 23 Trillion and is entirely reliant on 17 yr old kids...who pay the bills?

In this scenario, you would be implying that the university administrators & teachers shouldn’t be paid. They are the ones generating the money that comes in to school via tuition.

This is a fair point. Similar to college baseball. where even the best teams do not have enough scholarships for the whole team to be on a full ride. NIL can help cover so one of the best baseball players in college ball doesn’t have to pay out of pocket

There are plenty of administrators who should be enrolled in a payback plan for how they collected a salary while creating a train wreck.

Agreed but let’s try to stay on topic. That’s an entirely other can of worms.

We had a good time at Ole Miss last weekend…definitely gave my son something to think about. Yea, the offer is kind of nebulous, but you can’t worry about that shite. Go take care of business and it will work out.

sounds like he has parents who care and will advise him. I am sure wherever he ends up he will be happy and it will be the right place for him.

It's incredible to me how often people bring up "capping" NIL earnings. You are essentially saying that an adult should only make so much money off of their popularity because they are play a sport in college. No other college student is held to that standard.

Now we have 17yr olds, who can barely read and write, demanding cash to be seen on a campus where they will be idolized, live like kings, and have access to a free 6-figure education.

While their coach is given a 6 figure loaner car. I get that NIL is not good for the game of college football, but when coaches are making more annually than 95% of these kids will make in a lifetime, its tough to argue that the system wasn't flawed well before NIL became a thing.

Make no mistake about it, the NIL, without ceilings and limitations, will lead-to the destruction of the NCAA as we know it. Same for the transfer portal.

So be it.

quote:

$100k NIL, one transfer per five year period, period, with a minimum three year commitment for the original signing school or a repayment clause which would allow a student athlete to transfer after two years.

Also, there needs to be strict NDA laws put in place so that a player is disqualified from playing against his former team IF he nas accepted NIL money.

Unless Congress plans on suspending the 13th and 14th amendments to the Constitution as well as all of their derived labor and anti-trust laws, and somehow declare that student athletes are no longer emancipated citizens, then this proposal would survive the scrutiny of the Supreme Court about as long as a fart in a gusty wind.

They don't even let tour pros collect an appearance fee at PGA events (I suspect some do under the table).

Every tour pro earns a minimum of $1M from endorsements and they play for weekly $20M purses.

Endorsements & paid visits are nothing less than free market investments.

College basketball has been a greasy, guns for hire deal for a while. Football’s just making up for lost time.

Yep, the next step is one school paying $7,500 for a recruit to not visit a rival school.

Already going on. Watch committed guys cancel Officials to other schools and I can almost guarantee the commited school paid them to stay home.

Everytime I see a Gump post this I just translate it as this:

Sucks that we can no longer be the only team to give chargers and pay players with bagmen. Now everyone can do it so we no longer can stock pile talent like we did under Saban and Bear.

That sounds incredibly naive.

But, to the point, the issue raised is not an NIL issue. Paying 5k for a visit is an enforcement issue, not an NIL issue unless some Company is signing recruits for a visit. It doesn't need a political solution; it needs the NCAA to man up and do their damn jobs or get completely out of the way.
