It has "become common" for recruits to ask for $5,000 merely to visit a school’s campus.
Posted by Hback

According to Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, “A practice of asking a school for a fee to simply visit campus has emerged; asking for $5,000 just to visit has become common. During visits, discussions now emerge regarding how much a student-athlete can expect from NIL"
“Congress needs to enact NIL legislation as soon as possible,” he said. When asked to rate his confidence on a scale of 1 to 10 in the NCAA being able to get effective rules and guardrails put in place without federal legislation, Smith put it at a four.
Smith said the issue has been compounded by the presence of collectives, many of which he noted have gone from being 501(c)(3) organizations to limited liability corporations in light of a recent IRS interpretation.

"become common" is the most hilarious part as if this wasn't already an issues for decades.
I remember a recruit years ago we were trying to pay to come visit and MSU was trying to pay for him NOT to come visit us.

Yep, the next step is one school paying $7,500 for a recruit to not visit a rival school.
Ironic coming from the suckeyes.
They were well known, for decades, for being one of the most flagrant pay for play violating institutions in the NCAA.
ETA: The real issue OSU, et al, institutions have with NIL is it, in some ways, has leveled the playing field and detoothed the NCAA.
Make no mistake about it, the NIL, without ceilings and limitations, will lead-to the destruction of the NCAA as we know it. Same for the transfer portal. Both need to have limitations imposed.
$100k NIL, one transfer per five year period, period, with a minimum three year commitment for the original signing school or a repayment clause which would allow a student athlete to transfer after two years.
Also, there needs to be strict NDA laws put in place so that a player is disqualified from playing against his former team IF he nas accepted NIL money. This still leaves issues in place as, for instance, if a player transfers from say .... LSU to Texas knowing full well the two will play one another that season or the following season, plays and scheme (proprietary intellectual property) could be given to the player's new team upon transfer.
It's a big can of worms that has been opened.
The other one being fired former coaches influencing players to transfer as a means of revenge.

These are ‘official’ visits I’m sure…there are tons of rules on unofficial game day visits.
Been to 2 so far this season. They’re nice enough, but we’re good for a bit.

They don't even let tour pros collect an appearance fee at PGA events (I suspect some do under the table).
Now we have 17yr olds, who can barely read and write, demanding cash to be seen on a campus where they will be idolized, live like kings, and have access to a free 6-figure education.
Sucks to be slow and capable of operating a 4-function calculator.

This same thread was made on the recruiting board. Just gonna C&P:
Recruits have been paid to visit places for years. They're also paid to not visit places. Nothing new, just above board.

This is crazy. Would you sign a job offer with these conditions?

You realize that college football is a multi billion dollar business that relies entirely on these 17 year olds?

So? What percentage of the butts in seats came to see one or two players? They’re fans of a school, like I am, not a player. Sure, I want to win so pay the kids…but frick off with their self importance.

Good.
Let the kids get paid. This gravy train isn't going to last forever. As long as there are idiots who will pony up the money, the recruits should ask for it.
Hell, have them ask for everything. You want to post a video of your head coach grinding on me while I'm wearing your uniform? That'll be an extra $1K.

Let's have some fun with this. Do you realize that Higher Ed is 6.4% of a US GDP of over 23 Trillion and is entirely reliant on 17 yr old kids...who pay the bills?
To be clear, if they can get it more power to them. Just don't ask me to tell you it isn't idiotic and not laugh about it.

You realize that these kids are not paid by the university? this is called free market capitalism. They are worth exactly what they can get someone to pay them.

No, seems like NIL is attached to a school (all scholarship football players make $X/yr is what the schools push). My son is going through the recruiting process now…but it’s real hazy about where the money comes from.

Not funded by a school. Funded by advertisers and rich guys that want to win.

You’ve just described the awkward, slimy transaction that is modern CFB.
