is this an anomaly or are the days of saban getting great coordinators over?

his 2 guys this year are not impressive. WE had Steele here shortly - he did not impress. someone accurately called him a journeyman. And the OC - never heard of him.

I’m sorry, but what does this have to do with the concrete thread?

Then you must be a moron. No need to answer that. Brian Kelly begged Tommy Rees to come to Baton Rouge with him as OC. He said no.

I don't believe their OC ever even coached offense in college

This is a narrative that Alabama fans love to push to calm their own anxieties over the hire.
Great news, we'll find out how good he is in a couple of weeks.

What?

New OC and no clear starter at QB is not a good sign.

Saban has never named a new starting QB before the opening game. New OC or not.

He has been the OC at Notre Dame for 3 years and at least 5 years on staff there. And yes, Kelly did want him at LSU but he decided to stay at ND. Time will tell if he does well at Bama. He certainly has the talent there that he did not have at ND.

Sorry Cap. I definitely know who he is and his accomplishments...was just playing off of d stone's concrete thread joke.

Steele is a proven SEC defensive coordinator and he's a team/organization guy. He's a lot better than a lot of other D coordinators. Tommy Rees. Lol. That seems like it's an Ed Orgeron level Hail Mary hire from 3000 feet.
He's run through everybody, he's an a-hole to work for, he's on the way down because he's so old and he has to take who he can get now. The guys he will get are old standbys and guys on the rise who are young and want to immerse in the Saban system for the resume. This is a coach who will be 76/77 when the 2023 class he's recruiting graduates.

Steele is a pretty clear upgrade on Golding. If Steele can replicate his success at Auburn, with a higher baseline of talent, Alabama should be good to go on the defensive side. Of course, Steele does seem like a fallback type option as a retread, but should make things better regardless.
Rees is an open question. No way around that. Alabama talent will help, but this isn’t Kiffin/Sark where the primary concern was personality fit.

Steele was very impressive at Auburn
had you ever heard of Jim McElwain when he went to Bama? Turned out pretty good.
How about Doug Nussmeier. Turned our pretty good.
Your're trying to answer a question before it is asked (All based on hope by the way) that no one can answer until we actually see them play. Nobody has any idea other than speculation and again, hope.
Tommy doesn't impress you because
A. he turned down Kelly only to go to Bama a year later.
B. He doesn't chunk it all over the friggin field...and we don't want him to but we have no idea what he can do here. As you guys say about Kelly, he has much more to work with at LSU, same for Tommy at Bama.

That's fair. He is certainly less of a headline grabbing hire. If I am a Bama fan though, I am not opposed to pivoting to a stronger ground game behind a mammoth O-line.

Yeah, but Brian Kelly's 'tarded.

Many of our "great coordinators" weren't considered great at all when they got to Bama(eg Kiffin, Sark, Daboll, Pruitt) but made a rep by what they did at Bama.

He realized how big of a mistake it was, so he's trying to make up for it by coaching for the 2nd best team in the west. That's just a fact. It ended up working out better for us, anyway. Denbrock runs a very versatile system that probably works better with Kelly's adaptive mindset.

This is our hope. The defense has looked really good from reports. All of Bamas Nc except the one with Tua has all been won with a supposed game manager at QB. That’s Bamas strength. Saban hot away from it and it finally came home to roost last year. I’m not calling for a Nc this is a young team but I do think we will see a more disciplined defensive oriented team like we have seen before and I’m looking forward to it.
