Is the tide starting to turn on the Tide's chances at a rematch?

Would You Be Cool If Alabama Beats An Unbeaten LSU In The BCS Championship?
by Pete Fiutak

LSU 9 – Alabama 6. Ball game.

This has nothing to do with Alabama, just like it had nothing to do with Florida in 1996. This is about the process, and a team shouldn’t get a do-over. And just like it wasn’t about Nebraska in 2001, a team shouldn’t be allowed to be named the best team in the country if you’re not the best team in your division, much less your conference.

If LSU beats Arkansas and Georgia, I don’t care what happens in the BCS championship since it’ll be irrelevant unless Oklahoma State gets in . . .

Again, LSU 9 – Alabama 6. Ball game.

If LSU is 13-0 and Alabama is No. 2 in the BCS standings, the Tigers should strut out of the Georgia Dome with a No. 1 finger in the air like Larry Bird – with the money ball still flying - walking off the court at the end of the 1988 all-star game three-point shootout. And then they shouldn’t even show up in New Orleans. There’s no need.

LSU beat Alabama this season.

Therefore, there cannot be a rematch in the BCS National Championship Game as a matter of pure principle. I will not recognize Alabama as the national champion should the Tide beat the Tigers in New Orleans on January 9, 2012.

Been there, done that. Didn’t we already have a prequel to this movie? If Alabama makes its way to New Orleans to play an undefeated LSU team -- it solves nothing, and proves nothing.

The Tigers have already rolled the Tide on the road, and a rematch, albeit in the state of Louisiana would be a win on neutral turf and not nearly as impressive, even if the score is higher (and please let it be).

What we would have is a tie on the season with no way to break the tie aside from awarding the team that won last as the victor.

Alabama had its shot . . . And that’s where its title aspirations should end.

So bring on a new challenger. There’s still Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Virginia Tech all with one loss. For that matter, Boise State and Houston are still waiting in the un-clipped BCS weeds. Bring on anybody--but just don’t bring on Alabama again.

No, I am not cool with Alabama being the national champion if they beat an undefeated LSU team in the BCS title game.

If you cannot win your own conference – or in this case your own division - you do not belong in the national championship game.

Even if we dismiss that simple – but effective - argument, Alabama should not win the BCS title over an LSU team that finished the regular season undefeated.

Should the Crimson Tide win a rematch on January 9th, the teams would have split the season series. Rather than just award the title to the team that won the most recent game – something college football has done (albeit erroneously) over the years – we should evaluate each team’s entire body of work.

Since both teams would each have only one loss, what factor would prove which team is better?

The answer is simple - strength of schedule.

A careful evaluation of each team will prove that LSU has the tougher schedule of the two. LSU has defeated six ranked teams so far, while Alabama has only beaten three. Should the Tigers go undefeated, they will pick up win number 7 (against Arkansas) and 8 (against Georgia in the SEC title game) against ranked opponents in the next two weeks.

Should Alabama still win the title even though LSU beat them during the regular season, and won twice the amount of games against ranked opponents?

Absolutely not – that would send the wrong message.

Gary Danielson is also becoming more outspoken on the topic too.

Danielson's POV is interesting because he's previously demonstrated an ability to influence polls. If LSU wins Friday, Danielson will start a pitch against a rematch that could significantly influence voters. And he'll have 2 consecutive weeks to move those voters -- LSU-Arky & LSU-UGA.

Result? . . . . If OSU beats OU Dec 5th (big if), Bama may well get jumped.

Danielson is also covering the Bama-Auburn game

That is a helluva lot of National TV time to carry an argument.

FWIW, here is Danielson's interview on Finebaum from earlier today: LINK
Danielson supports a split title if LSU enters the MNCCG undefeated and gets beaten.

there's no "may well" about it. Bama fans are unable to comprehend the fact that "if" OSU wins, they "will" jump Bama. No "ifs" about it.

agree.

It would be pure insanity for the BCS to put the two best teams in that game. That isn't what the BCS is about. Screw the BCS if they have the nerve to do that, ridiculous!

I think Bama and LSU are the two best teams, and I think Bama should go (if the beat Auburn), but nobody in the north, west, and midwest want to see a rematch, and they don't want to see two SEC teams in the MNC game either. It ain't gonna happen if OSU wins.....period.

I don't get how people think OU will win that game.

Oklahoma State is just much better than them.

and THIS is what the myopic deep south fans fail to register...there are more votes than just those from the southeast. The rest of the nation is going to want "their" guy in regardless of who it is...preferably someone with a high powered offense.

Everyone who is saying this is full of hypocrisy. Why is it ok most years to forgive a team and give them a 2nd chance when they lose a game? Why should a team that loses a game in a weak conference/division be given a 2nd chance, and a team who plays in the toughest conference and division in college football be penalized? The object of the BCS formula is to try and match up the 2 best teams. No one with half a brain who has watched this football season to date can say with a straight face that LSU and Bama are not the two best teams in college football. This would not be a precedent to put a team that didn't win their conference championship in the title game.

The thing is multiple teams had their chance to pretty much not make this a debate and they choked. If Bama had beaten LSU I wouldn't want a rematch, but I damn sure could admit Bama and LSU are the top two teams this season.

and those voters will go as far as giving OSU first place votes over LSU in order to get it done. The system is very easily manipulated.....it's not about the best two teams in the country (unfortunately)

yeah imagine that...

the team's fans who backed in will be pumped about getting another shot at the team who beat them at home... and the fans of the team who has beaten everyone in their path will be pissed they have to do it again....OH THE OUTRAGE
