We hand it off to Herschel
There's a hole
...5...10..12
He's running over people!
Oh, you Herschel Walker!
My God almighty!
He ran right through two men!
Herschel ran right over two men!
They had him dead away inside the 9
Herschel Walker went 16 yards
He drove right over those orange shirts
And is just driving and running with those big thighs
My God, a freshman!

quote:

From 16 yards out Walker perfected a pitch sweep, ran through two safeties and scored a touchdown. Minutes later, Walker scored again with a touchdown that he ran from 9 yards out allowing the bulldogs to make an incredible comeback and win their first game of the season.

I think he’s the best ; but I’m a UGA fan.

He is clearly one of the most recognized voices in sports history.

But, I can see why fans of other teams not growing up listening to his calls would just think he’s ok. Because for many of us the voice of our team is/was a personal connection to the team.

Back in the day, radio was the main way to experience a game. The old guys really painted a picture.

Gary Sanders and Gusty Yearout were the voices that made me an Auburn fan.

We all have our favorite radio guys growing up and John Forney was part of the family, the Bama family. In short, stupid question.

I’ve watched many games with the TV muted & Munson on the radio.

Munson was the best and there were many great play-by-play guys in the SEC. Jim Fyffe of course...and I always thought John Ward at UT and Jack Cristol at State were very good too. Ga Tech had Al Ciraldo back in the day who was great too. Reminds me of sitting behind hay bails shooting dove on a Saturday with my old man when I was growing up. We'd listen to play-by-play on radio while we hunted. Got to hunt with former Alabama QB Steadman Shealy a time or two.

Larry did not just call games, he painted a picture

that style of broadcasting is becoming a lost art

His call on the Darren McFadden(freshman year) 70 yard TD run will always be one of my favorites.

Man that is some classic Munson right there. "So that's what we were supposed to be worried about"

Larry Munson - “and now we’ve got the ball at the 32 and a half”

Jack Cristil - “and now for the starting lineups...at wide receiver, 6 tall and 195 from Eupora, MS.”......

Exactly. Spent many Saturdays hunting birds and listening to Munson call the game on a transistor radio. To my kids, all in their 20s, this is a foreign concept, because now, you can see every UGA game on TV or on a stream. They couldn't grasp the idea that, when I was a kid, UGA only played on TV a few times a year. Usually the Ga/Fla game for sure, Clemson or South Carolina, and GT. That was it unless UGA got a New Years Day bowl game.

For unabashed homerism that made UGA fans feel someone was sharing their joy and pain, and for creating colorful phrases that have become lore, Munson is unrivaled. In SC in the 70's and 80's, Jim Phillips (Clemson) and Bob Fulton (USC) were the voice of the programs. Bob Fulton was a five star announcer providing play-by-play for mostly two star teams. Neither team's current announcers can hold a candle (or mic) to those two.

Had some LSU baws tell me they had no idea what the Hobnail Boot game was, and said they've never heard that call.

I had no idea how to process that.
