I don't know if they broke rules, but they told some 5th year kids who had signed nfl contracts that they could sue and get eligibility, and they lined up the judge and the venue for the suit. They had an active role in trying to subvert NCAA rules via a lawsuit.

Why would it not matter? Did LSU sign these players already and listed on a roster? or did they just offer these players, being no different than what that article states?
a commitment is quite different than a signature on a contract.
