Is it time to give Relegation serious consideration in CFB? It may save the game.

As we can all see, a Super League is forming in CFB and it will change the landscape and the game as we know it. It will be a game of Haves and Have-nots.

But with relegation, it will give lesser programs something to really play for.

Divide the landscape into three sub divisions: AAA, Minor, and Premier.

The Top three teams in the two lower subdivisions every year advance to the next tier, and the bottom three of the top two subdivisions relegate to the next lower tier.

It would also help keep Power programs now doing everything they can to not fall too far and possibly face relegation.

It would help make the season important and some what special for fans of every program if they had something to chase, like advancing to the Premier Group. Even if they get relegated the next season, that season would still be memorable.

It works in Soccer.

Thoughts?

I’ve put some thought into this and it could actually be exciting but unlike premier the turnover in college means a team can 15-0 and then 5-5 the next season. It would have to be like a multi year tier thing where like you have to have more than one really bad season to be relegated.

However a matchup with the top B team and bottom A team, where the loser gets relegated would be ratings Gold, and pretty fun.

Why not?

Flopping is already a part of the game.

Not to mention that your coach is pretty notorious for telling his players to flop.

What about other sports. You going to have the football team in the big 12 but the basketball team in the sec?

There will be no conferences in Football.

Like Notre Dame. Football = No Conference. All other sports = ACC.

College football will be ruined if you turn it into a pseudo minor league. Ever see the ratings for minor league sports. There are none. It’s like the wnba trounces minor league sports

With all this nil and paying players nonsense, I’ve always said the name on the front of the jersey not the name on the back makes college sports the cash cow it is. Once fans start feeling like their is a disconnect from their school it’s done.

Nobody is here to watch little Johnny Tailback try to develop his game. All they care about is lsu beating auburn. If the players aren’t invested in winning and only in a developmental league type situation. It’s all done people. Done

I’m from the Government and I’m here to fix it, has an outstanding track record of both predictable and intended outcomes.

It sounds like the exact opposite.

Our current system is a monarchy/oligarchy. I want 4 year performance relegation.

Too much money involved. Getting relegated would kill viewership and attendance.

I understand this line of thinking as nobody in America really pays attention to lesser leagues, but most fans have emotional, financial, personal, and academic connections to their schools.

How does viewership/fan support change for European soccer teams when they become relegated?

How would it help the game? All that's going to do is make the 99% of the fanbase of the relegated team stop following the sport.

The distinctness of college football is the loyalty to team/school/state. There is some player attachment in college football and some team attachment in pro sports. If you mess that up it’s over. Nobody is trying to watch AAA NFL….I’ll just watch the NFL.

It’s not built into the dna of the sporting system, and that is vital.
