I just can’t believe it has t caused mutiny among the citizenry.
It's just part of becoming a big state school. Michigan is about 50-50 out of state.
And the University of Alabama has been virtually unfazed by any economic downturns.
They've been on a building renaissance for 15 years and buying up land surrounding campus and building on it.
They completed a $600 million capital campaign 15 years ago and kicked off another $1.5 billion one last year of which $1 billion is already raised.
So Alabama really has been in a bubble with funds, donations, tuition raised and university owned mineral rights.

Are they staying after graduation?
Many are. Huntsville and Mobile have become economic engines in not just the South but the country with diversified economies.

Astute point Colonel, I guess she’ll have to drown her sorrows by watching her bank account grow!

She made the right choice and we paid full tuition for her to attend Texas A&M.

How do you have ANY idea how her life would have played out if she'd gone to Alabama?
What a stupid, short sighted post!

Check UF again and report back

Alabama's merit scholarships are legit. Went to Bama this summer on a campus tour with my son. Everyone in his group was from out of state: Georgia, California, and Wisconsin.

Shrewd…..aggy education at work…

Is this basically saying she spreads her legs and even a convent wouldn't be able to keep her pure?

It was just a little friendly ribbing there Coach. You’re right, I don’t know how things would have turned out had she gone to Bama.
I suspect she would have been just as successful.
But living here in Texas, I wanted her to take full advantage of the A&M network.
Alabama is a fine school!

The honors program at Alabama is awesome. Tons of support for students and a lot of really bright kids in the classes in my experience.

No state education lottery. They have to make up the money with higher % out of state students.
This is also why both Auburn and Alabama baseball programs are always going to have a hard time competing if the 11.7 rule remains.
Most other state schools can use a portion of their scholarship lottery funds to help flesh out all those half and quarter schollies to the baseball team, but Alabama schools can't do this.
Vandy of course takes it to another level because they just use endowment cash to pay full rides for all of their roster.

Do the residents not complain about that?
Tech will catch flack about it occasionally when the wrong kid gets passed over for little Jimmy from Connecticut.
No qualified in state student is getting rejected to make room for an out of state student. There is no cap on enrollment like GT and UGA have. In state total enrollment has stayed roughly the same while out of state enrollment with 3x the tuition has exploded.
It's more like Alabama has figured out how to convince out of state students to come to UA and subsidize the education of in state students.

So classy, and stupid all at once. You overpaid for a degree that you could have gotten at hundreds of universities. Your ROI will take years. Way to go cowboy.

Per your request jump…their admission questionnaire page says that their acceptance rate for OOS is the same as in state and it mirrors the OOS’s percentage of the student body of 16%. I suspect they have 3-5% international as well.

I have no problem with open doors to others. I am a resident and my wife and I and both children have degrees there. Our higher enrollment numbers allow great scholars from other states access and makes us stronger. We had over 1000 from Illinois a couple of years ago. They were, for the most part, highly qualified and they also pay out of state tuition. Lots of new buildings in Tuscaloosa.

Hard to believe for UF. Thanks.

It’s a great plan. If the tax payers are good with it and qualified Alabama kids aren’t getting squeezed out then it sounds like a win for everybody. Cheers!

I said sweetie, you really need to think hard about your future.

That just shows that every once in a while the acorn does fall far from the tree.

Some may be surprised that Alabama's out of state recruiting efforts goes back 100 years.
George H Denny (Namesake of Bryant-Denny Stadium and Denny Chimes) oversaw a large expansion and marketing efforts specifically centered in New England. Capitalizing on the football team's success, he heavily advertised Alabama in Northeast newspapers as an affordable alternative to schools in the Northeast.
It's why to this day why a good chunk of students come from New England, because they are legacies and their families have been going there for generations. It's also why the university has a significantly large Jewish population than you'd see at many Southern universities. They've been a fixture since 1912.
