Is Brent Venables next in this sign stealing fiasco?

SI article from 2020 Clempson
Might explain the quick turnaround at Oklahoma
quote:
Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is paid more than $2 million a year for many reasons—he can teach the game, he can recruit elite players, he can build a defensive gameplan. But he’s also a gifted in-game caller, and some of that is built upon what his spies are telling him
quote:
As for Clemson: Venables is a notably late defensive play-caller, usually waiting to see how the offense lines up and then firing off his own signals and calls in the few seconds he has before the ball is snapped. The coaches who spoke to SI for this story attributed that to waiting for information from his code breakers.
quote:
“They have an army of support personnel,” one coach said. “That’s why Venables gets the calls in so late. I’m not sure of the chain of communication to Venables, but he waits for it.”

I'd wager every team does this in some capacity.

Then he should ask for a refund going 6-7 last year and losing so many close games.
Speculation is a dangerous game.

Probably. But if Michigan gets pinched none of us will complain.

What do you mean by “capacity” exactly? If you’re implying every team sends personnel to film opposing teams, study it overlayed with all-22 film, and monitors signs in-game, relaying the call to the defensive coordinator so he can call the perfect coverage or blitz … well I think you’d be wrong

honestly last years dip is more surprising than this years bounce back.

So, did he just have a staffer snag them during a timeout or did he wait til players were getting their juice boxes at half?

He didn't have his spy network set up yet.

How long before teams start using AI to predict plays?

Interesting idea - as the season progresses, patterns are established, formations more obvious, plays predictable... makes sense

I was listening to the Athletic podcast yesterday and one of the guys said he texted a bunch of coaches about the Harbaugh scandal. They all said they’ve known about this for years and that Brent Venables was the other guy everyone knows about.

Not sure you understand what the qualifier "in some capacity" is meant to imply.

I think this will be the start of something that isn't good...sort of like false accusers, etc. If one is guilty, burn them. However, what's to stop the false ones gaining traction, especially the hit pieces "journalists" put out...

I have heard several media claim this last few months … espn mainly … I know several fans on this site have said it before as well. Yet no one has any proof…. So speculation is one thing …. Another is waiting for an offense to line up so you can make adjustments which is the same thing Saban does … which is why we went no huddle when we played them in 2014 so they couldn’t adjust and it’s why Saban and any goof defensive guy hates the spread offenses.
LSU had basically everyone of our plays in the 2003 national title game …. OU coaches knew in the first quarter they should have never practiced in New Orleans .
Again sign stealing isn’t illegal . If you scout before the game or use electronics it is …..which is totally different . Why do you think most coaches have those gay signs out there because everyone knows people are doing it …

To be clear...Michigan won't get pinched for stealing signs. Yes, probably most, if not all schools try to do that.
Michigan will get pinched for on campus scouting of opponents which is explicitly forbidden. This was not a one-time incident. It is systemic by Harnaugh and Michigan. 30+ games of 11 opponents over three years. One school provided security footage of the occupant recording video of the sideline from his seat the entire game.
It was systemic not just because of the volume of incidents. First of all, over three years...and in order for such scouting to have had any benefit to Michigan, the entire staff would have had to be in on it. Certainly the coordinators at least. And I don't think any of us believe Harbaugh himself wasn't involved. Second...there must have been reimbursement for the cost of tickets, travel expenses, etc. There will be a financial paper trail leading from the staffer who bought the tickets. Surely no such reimbursement could happen without Harbaugh's approval. Finally, throw in the suspension of Harbaugh to start the season.
Other schools are being very quick to provide evidence to bust Michigan. Clearly there is no love lost. The fact that one school went back through stadium security video footage to find the seat occupant and pass that video on to the NCAA is very telling.

Did you not hear from Jamarcus and Jeff Saturday this morning?
Great football teams have video staff that do nothing but film and watch film and listen to the other team.
This includes signs and audibles. Every little detail. There’s a reason Saban has 40 people on his staff. Half of them watch and listen to film all day.
What Michigan did was perfectly legal because it was in the open. If Michigan snuck into another campus or inside a closed door practice like the patriots I would consider it to be different.
I’m going to wait to hear all the facts but at this point it all sounds typical.
