What hero worship do you have in mind? History says he was an outstanding QB of his era. One of his contemporaries at BAMA was Scott Hunter. BAMA was not a good football team either. Doesn't turn Scott Hunter into Greg McElroy.

Yes Archie is the most overrated QB in SEC....

I saw him play at Ole Miss and the Saints.

Until 1978 with the Saints I thought Bobby Scott was the better of the two. Archie was winging it on many plays back then just like at ole Miss.

Many of the older Ole Miss fans liked Charlie Conerly over Archie, and Charlie was a great Qb at Ole Miss.

Only Ole Miss fans and a few others in this long post think he is this elite qb.

Alabama in the 60's had 3 qbs better than Manning.

Now post their stats like you did in the OP so we can see just how dumb you are.

What the Ole Miss homers at espn have to say about it.
quote:

50. Archie Manning (QB, Ole Miss, 1968-70) Passing yards: 4,753 | Touchdowns: 56 | Rushing yards: 823 With a strong arm, crazy legs and an aw-shucks smile, Manning signed a lifelong lease in the hearts of not just Ole Miss football fans, but fans throughout the south. After Manning arrived on the scene in Oxford by leading a 10-8 upset of Alabama in 1968, ABC Sports moved the Rebels' game at Alabama in 1969 to early-season prime time. Manning gained 540 yards of total offense, an SEC record that stood for more than three decades, in a 33-32 loss. The valiant effort in a losing cause resonated in a state that venerated its Civil War heritage. As a senior in 1970, Manning led the Rebels to a 5-1 start and a No. 13 ranking before suffering a broken arm against Houston. He didn't win the Heisman, but being a folk hero turned out just fine.

Absolutely agree... And to prove it, the PTB, matched up two SEC teams in the Gator Bowl and Pat Sullivan whipped that arse 35 to 28!

Namath, Stabler and Pat Trammel.
Those 3 either won a national title or a super bowl or both.

Yeah, they played for Alabama which is a better team.

Here are Namath's college stats for 3 years as a starter:

203 completions on 374 attempts(54%) for 2713 yards(only 1 season above 1k yards, his first in 1962. 25 TDs, on 19 interceptions.

That was over a 3 year career.

Now Mac Jones just from last year alone.

311 completions on 402 attempts(77%) for 4,500 yards. 41 TDs on 4 interceptions.

Different game.

Not sure why you're getting down voted for stating facts.

Big difference all these Alabama qbs won real national titles.
The 69 and 70 Ole Miss team had 14 drafts picks. Those 2 teams had more picks than the 61 and 66 undefeated Alabama teams.

So NFL talent wise Ole Miss had more than the Alabama's best teams.

Archie was one of the most talented QBs of the decade, never had an opportunity to play with talented people around him, but his greatness was obvious to anyone who understood footballl

I am a LSU fan, and I saw him play in person. Manning was one of the better college quarterbacks to play the game. I saw him lead an unbelievable comeback against LSU in Tiger Stadium in 1968, and he beat one of the better LSU teams in Jackson in 1969. He was a great player.

He threw 9 TDs in 30 games in his career. Now I know you're fricking retarded.

Alabama won the national championship in 1961 because they had 6 shutouts and only gave up 25 points and 3 TDs all year, not because of anything Pat fricking Trammell did. Cade Foster could have played QB for 1961 Alabama and they'd have still won the national championship.

You can't even use Google or Wikipedia worth a shite.

If you go 5 years before Manning and 5 years after Manning starting at 1968. Using 10 seasons from 1964-1973. You got these QBs who were better
Namath
Stabler
Spurrier
Pat Sullivan
All won national titles, super bowls, or Heisman Manning did not win any of those.

You said Pat Trammell was better. You're a fricking idiot. Like I already posted...you don't have the football IQ to be in this conversation. Why don't you just STFU and move on and stop embarrassing yourself?

He was SEC player of the year in 1961 and 5th in the Heisman. Won the title in 1961 and 1 SEC title.

In 3 year as a starter he loss 2 games. He was Bryant's favorite player.
