This is true and Davis should have never been the President of the Confederacy.
The southern military was run on who knows who and the same thing happened in the government.
The south appointed many into command position based knowing someone form West Point before the war, this happens in the north.
No promotions by ability it was by like Lee knowing the person, by 1862 you have many bad commanders in the southern western Army like Bragg. Lee was running of good candidates before 1863 and you get the battle of Gettysburg with the worst Crops commander (ok it is a close race with Ewell) Hill and worst divisional commander letting the attack that morning.
The very things the south is fighting against Davis was trying to do in the south.

Slavery was here long before the first black person from Africa got here by misadventure of that ship owner.
Indentured servants were here on the first boats and that practice was in place a long time by 1776.
Those servants were in fact slaves but could work their debt off to be freed.
Some never could work the debt off, due to what we called the company store of the 1860's and later. I owned my soul to the company store was common in those towns.
So, slavery did it really end at the end of the Civil War, there are different types of slavery.

Slavery should have ended in the US after the revolutionary war.
But due to many in tobacco farming and shipping making money it did not.
Many slaves were told if they fought in that war, they would be freed, and for the most part this did not happen.
The invitation of the cotton gin changed the course of slavery in the US.
From low population to the numbers before the Civil War.

SlowFlowPro you really need to read the issues of this country and that many states want to leave the union for years and none over slavery it is different issues and it is mostly northern states wanting to leave the Union.
And not one word is written about them not having the right to leave the Union.
We are taught is school by the history books bought by the schools' system.
These history books simplify many issues, like the civil war., World War I etc.
You do not have the time to teach the civil war in 9 months of school.
You have to cover the whole history of the US from the late 1500's until today leaving you 1 week or 2 at max to teach the history of the civil war.
In the 1970 we spend 1 week on the war.
Your getting a very simplified version of the war and making broad statements with little knowledge of the time or men.

Yes, the owner of the largest amount of slaves in Louisiana is a black woman.
Many slaves are owned in Louisiana and South Carolina by freed men and women. Some of these freed families date to the 1780s in both states..

RobertFootball I have read 1000's of soldier's letter from the war and you do not see slavery in the southern letters.
It is about right, and the main right is they speak of is the right to leave the Union.
Do not think of the Union as we see it today, your loyalty is to the state not the Union.
This is why many fought for the south that were in the US Army at the start of the war.
Washington DC is not the powerhouse it is today. And America is seen by Europe as a back water country of no means.
Europe needed the cotton and not much else.

Joeypeeps787 Yes this is what they called them at the time.
It is right there on the recruiting posters of 1861.
You see nothing in the posters about slavery at all in 1861.
Manpower becomes the issue before 1863, and then you see the posters about slavery.

Mike da Tigah this is correct.
What I like is you have teachers today teaching that up to 90% of southern families owned slaves. It is less than 6% s the price of a slave was far out of the means of the average framer.
When the war started one side of family lived in Livingston Parish, they owned no slaves and the father went to fight in Virginia
in the 7th Louisiana. He left his wive and family with no real means to plan and grow food. An Indian who lived down the road helped plan and gather the food for the family. You still had Indians in Livingston Parish in 1860s. The father dead in the war in 1862 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia. The family moved to Baton Rouge in the late 1860s.

The end of slavery was coming fast. Once Britian got the cotton to grow in Egypt there is no mass need for slavery to pick the cotton.
Picking cotton is hard work, I did it long back in the early 1960's.
The north did not want to see the slaves moved into the industry as it would destroy the norths huge lead on manufactory and cost jobs in the north. Which is turn is why you see the high tariffs on machinery imported to the US. This was done to keep the norths lead in producing goods.

They did not, the issue is rights and that is what they write in their letters.
You never see a letter I am fighting to keep slavery it is about the north taking their rights away and everyone knew the future was in producing goods. Which means you have to get machinery.
Go look at the records of the number of freed men in the south it is a huge number.

Go to the LSU library and read the letters of the Delaware family I donated to LSU. One member of the family fights for Louisiana and is killed in August 1862, the others fight for the north.
The south has the right to secession from the Union; this right is why the one son is fighting for Louisiana. There is no talk at all about slavery,
The talk is about the north passing laws to keep the tariffs high on importing machines to manufacture goods.
New Orlean has near 70% of all this machinery in the south,
The tariff issue is one of the causes of the war.

Go look at the recruiting posters of 1861.
When the south demanded the forts back and the North would not give them up. the south fired on Fort Sumter.
When the south left the Union the forts should by law go back to state ownership.
Once fired upon the North recruited the huge army for that time in US history.
The recruiting poster for the south are about defending the south against Union aggression.
The Northern posters are about fighting the South for firing on northern forts and aggression to the north.
There are no posters about freeing the slaves, and there are slaves in a few northern states still.
Slavery becomes the issue when the casualties on both sides by the end of the bloody summer of 1862.
Also, between Louisiana and South Caroline you have more free blacks than the rest of the United States combined.
The underground railroad did not stop in the north, it went to Canada, as many made a living at the time catching so called slaves and selling them back in the south. You have a number of free men and women taken and sold in the south at this time,

Ambrose did do a little research, not much. But his clear lack of not listening to the members of 1st and 3rd platoon hurts the account. Also, a number of officers in easy and the 3rd battalion caught mistakes before the book was published. Members in the regimental and division staff also were talked with and much left out.
I know the stories that would make Winters look bad, but why put them out, Ambrose knew them and left them out of the book.
Everyone knew Winters was a track and field man in college, leaving out about the wire trap in the field he ran across belittled what he did that day. When he forgot to pull the ring on the grenade, it was lucky for him the German soldier forgot to pull the string on his grenade.
Still Ambrose could have done some foot work in DC and filled the holes.
But not all the WWII records are open to this date.

It seems many do not know the early church history; Rome is not the main church until after 300 AD.
Each area has a pope (leader figure), Jerusalem was Peter, Aisa Minor was John etc.
The early church fathers had to get on to the church in Rome and Egypt for bringing in pagan ideas. There are many letters on this issue.
Peter was visiting the outlaying church when he went to Rome.
The list of the early Popes in Rome does not include Peter and there are like 7 not listed in many places now, but historical documents name them.
Remember there is no Old Testament at that time just scrolls at 1AD, the concept of an old testament comes later.

Until everyone starts to learn Hebrew many issues come up due to not understanding Hebrew.
Hebrew is read three ways, by what is written, by number (as each letter is also a number) and by the symbolic meaning.
The first word in the Bible tells you the message, Barasheet or Beresheet.
The names in the genealogy of Jesus tells you the message.
The name of God tells you the message.
Yawweh
I am that I am
He who was, He who is, He who will be
Also means
Behold see, Behold (the) nail
Hebrew is very deep.

Steven walked into a gold mine when he was let go at his last University and moved to New Orleans.
The 506th held their reunions in New Orleans for years on end and many of the men of the unit were on WWL radio all the time, mainly the Priest. I used to listen to them talk on the radio driving to New Orleans between 1981-1986.
The Priest was writing a book on the unit, he is the battalion Priest from New Orleans.
Steve just lucked out and it is Dick Winters that picked who would write the book.
The show and book are totally focused on 2nd platoon of easy company of the 506th battalion.
The role of the first platoon is cut back and the 3rd platoon is like doing a disappearing act.
You can find the letters of these men writing Steve and getting on to him, but the driving force is Winters.
The show makes out that Dike froze in the attack on Foy, he did not he was wounded in the right shoulder, this is when Spears takes over the company.
The show makes it seem Sobel did not jump on D-day, he did and lead an attack taking out a German machine gun position.
Winters when confronted about misquotes and mistakes would stop talking.
Sobel in the end outranked Winters, which may have played a major part on why he did not want to be called up for the Korean War.
The Sobel -Winters battle has more to it than the show or book tell. The sgt revolt was likely planned higher up and the spot light is on Sink being behind it.
Winters was not a fan of Sink and mainly Maxwell D. Taylor who he felt did not give the medals out to the men as he should have during his time in command.
