I actually hope so. I don't think th epowers that be will care that much at the end of the day. The college presidents only liked the money they were getting from it, but now that it is being siphoned off by the players, there is no need to have theses kids on campus since they are not really college students.

They might not be empty, but tickets will be much easier to come by. The only things setting apart college athletics from professional athletics are the pageantry and ties the fans and alumni have to their schools/athletes.
Schools are shifting away from marching bands and other student led entertainment to stadium DJs and LED light shows. Revenue sport athletes are basically cordoned off from the student population, and rarely stick around long enough to get a degree anyway. 15 or so years ago I was doing group projects with the starting QB and starting center in a random geology class; I can't imagine that happens much at all these days.
All that stuff is ultimately going to erode the base of support over time for these programs.

I dont even think its the different forms of entertainment as the primary culprit
I think its the coddled parenting. Despite the country having a much larger population today, less and less kids play football. Parents are babying their kids and wont let them play sports, couldnt bare the thought of them getting hurt
Kids who dont play sports as kids, wont grow up to love sports
Ehhh...
The sports themselves changed. Think about how long a football game took back when we were kids vs now. Even televised games didn't take nearly as long as they do now.
It's hard to care about some of these when they start at 8 PM and run 3-4 hours (not including OT games).
Games have so many lulls in the action now. Couple that with players constantly moving around.
It used to be you named a player, you immediately associated them with their school:
Bo Jackson
Derrick Thomas
Joe Namath
Hershel Walker
And many more...
That feels like the same player association is dying. The sport, while still involving people in pads catching a ball, is fundamentally different. Hard to blame Gen Z for not feeling a nostalgic attachment to a sport that, from their perspective, is probably boring AF.

No problem, ESPN can pump in crowd noise, as long as your TV is tuned in, CFB is banking.
ESPN can pump in all the crowd noise they want, but they can't pump money into these college bank accounts when stadiums are half-filled, apparel sales plummet and and fans find better ways to spend their money!

Im not too worried about TV viewership going down, more people than ever are watching... Thanks to gambling. They just dont have loyalty to the programs
The whole "its a professional league now" bothers me less when you consider the guys going into college ball are not like prospects from 20 years ago, no matter what the NCAA did it was going to become more pro and less amateur.
Players today train from a young age, there are whole high schools set up just for playing football. Even though the number of people playing high school ball is declining, the caliber of players going into CFB is much higher. For better or worse thats where we are at

The commercials and constant replay reviews are my issues. The games just have no flow anymore.

Believe what you want, but the reality is LSU is just as vulnerable as any other program out there. LSU have lots of money, but boosters are only going to give so much money once a few high prized players turn out to be duds, a few transfer out or LSU has a couple of bad seasons and fans find better ways to spend their money.
No program is immune to the insanity that is occurring in college athletics!

I wasn't really trying to say that, but rather addressing the claim that Gen Z isn't interested. I think it has less to do with whether they played sports as kids and more with how boring the product on the field is, thanks to commercial breaks and instant replay.

I hear what you’re saying and agree that some of the stuff we’re seeing is disgusting. But I don’t think we’ll see empty stadiums.
“Panem et circenses”
At the end of the day the masses just want to be fed and entertained, and nothing entertains like sports.
That said, I’m starting to not really give a crap about it anymore either and the whole Nico thing and the current transfer portal structure is the reason why.
I’ll likely turn my attention to college softball and baseball which are less influenced due to being lower revenue sports.

Shouldn’t have paid these kids in the first place. Schools already were allowed to provide student athletes with a stipend on top of free education, room and board, world class training facilities and free development to pursue their dreams of playing in the NFL. Now they have created an absolute mess and a product that is embarrassing to watch.

Sup, bitches?
Yes, tickets are a lot more expensive. But they are for everything.
Austin is an extremely competitive market for entertainment $$$, always has been. Texas always has drawn well, even during the 2009-2021 shite show that was the worst in school history. The Buzz around the program now? It rivals anything in the past.
The crescendoing roar of the crowd on a long touchdown play, like cranking the volume to 11, is unlike anything in sport.
The fans will still come, get their hearts broken, and keep coming back for more.

Without the commercials, there will be no games on "free" TV. The networks don't provide these broadcasts out of the goodness of their hearts because they think viewers are entitled or have a right to watch college football on TV. They do it to make money, which they get from advertisers. And the amount of money they need to make has gotten larger because of the increased amounts they are paying to schools/conferences.
You want to do away with commercials, then get ready for 100% PPV TV.
And before anyone says there aren't any commercials on soccer broadcasts, there is oodles of advertising including overlays during game coverage.

no shite man, i understand where the money comes from. just the sheer amount of commercials is worse than it used to be. i totally get the schools have chosen more money by sacrificing some of the product quality.

The biggest problem is the portal with no repercussions. That alone is not a problem but that with the NIL has created a massive problem. We have the equivalent of the MLB players becoming free agents after every season.
Keep the four years of play but get ride of the 5 years to play 4 and put a year sit out if you transfer in the first two years. Have a free transfer after 2 years at a college and then you need to stay 2 years again to earn another transfer.
Then again you would need a board that had authority. NCAA has lost theirs.

I don’t disagree that it ruins the viewing experience. I just spent nearly 50 years in an advertising supported business (newspapers) and understand that because of the big contracts they need to recoup more money from advertising, which means more commercials.

This thread is ridiculous. This sounds like a post from 50 years ago or 20 years ago.
Listen, very few stadiums are packed in college football these days and it’s been that way for 50 years. For every Tennessee or Penn State that has 90+ thousand there are 4 that don’t. And you know why? Because the sport has never enforced rules or fairness. It’s always been a free for all where the top 20 programs buy every top tier player and then the other 90 teams get the scraps.
So, yes, this thread is correct that many fan bases will shrink because they won’t dominate as much. 11 win teams will become 9 win teams. 9 win teams will become 7 win teams. And teams that have been 7 win teams will spend to become 9/10 win teams.
So, no one feels sorry for any program that loses players to the portal or recruits due to NIL. If that means your fanbase shrinks welcome to the what everyone else has been dealing with. Everyone saw the stark contrast in Bama’s spring game attendance. Meanwhile, most other teams outside the top 20 had the usual number.
It all comes down to perspective and you guys don’t have that because you’ve been living the high life with your large fanbases and under the table recruiting. Now that everyone can buy players and players aren’t trapped for 4 years you think the world is coming to an end. It’s not at all. Most fanbases love this new era where they get multiple shots at recruiting players.

Which fans love it? Highly inaccurate. We love bitching about it maybe, but the problem persists
