Definitely wasn’t my first pick, but I have full confidence in Cohen after he has made a great hires IMO (Moorhead). Cohen is a baseball guy. I don’t think he makes this kind of hire unless he know damn well that Lemonis at least has the potential to be a great coach for us along with the current staff that we have in place. I also have little doubt when it comes to hiring a pitching coach. That has been Cohens forte the past years including assistants like Butch Thompson, Wes Johnson, and Gary Henderson. Cohen has a hand in all of these decisions more than people know. He might be an arse, but Cohen is an intelligent guy.

Pretty sure Loafers hires Howland.

Cohen did not hire Howland.

Skip Bertman hired Smoke Laval to replace him. Ray Tanner hired Chad Holbrook to replace him. Being a "baseball guy" doesn't come with it the benefit of the doubt as an AD. I'm sure Cohen personally has confidence he made a good hire, but that doesn't also mean it will inevitably be a good hire either. From an optics perspective, it's still pretty meh and a far cry from the assurances he made months ago.

This is an interesting bit of trivia.

Lemonis is also no stranger to Starkville. His father, Thomas, was a 1973 Mississippi State graduate in electrical engineering. Lemonis lived in Starkville as a newborn during his father's time at State.

Good post/info

State worked the search the right way and took the best available option. I hope Lemonis kills it, MSU supports the sport as well as anyone and deserves success.

I like his chances of being sucessful with the new stadium and JG being retained. Everyone wants to give all the credit to Henderson, but the truth is is that JG completely overhauled our teams 2 strike approach at the plate. JG and the players taking on the responsibilty of turning a negative into a positive gets completely overlooked by fans outside of Starkville.

I’ve known about Lemonis since his time at Louisville, where he put together the #1 recruiting class twice in 5 years.

HAHAHAHA. Come on. He was nowhere close to that. Louisville has 1 top-ten finish in recruiting in baseball - and it happened after Lemonis left.

And saying Kendall Rogers knows all about coaching searches is absurd.

Then why not just promote JG? He and Lemonis are both hitting coaches that may or may not have differing philosophies. Not saying it won’t or can’t work but just saying something is going to have to give there

I'm still kinda surprised the guy who skippered, what, the third best finish ever in State's baseball history(?) wasn't given more consideration, and I can think of another coach in the state of Mississippi who's often viewed as a great recruiter but questionable manager. I do like the sheer mass of Lemonis though. Adds some pizazz to the Governor's Cup rivalry

That was the correct move- to promote Gautreau- and I've said so for over a month now. I do not like the Lemonis hire.

Yeah it just makes little sense to me in college baseball when you can only have two paid assistants on staff and two coaches do the same thing.

Because he is a peasant and so is anyone who coaches at that peasant institution.

Yep- but aren't they letting teams have 3 next year?

All I know is He better bring in an elite pitching coach. I think he'll consistently win 30-35 games, but never be able to win a national championship- which is our goal.
