Malzahn will never again be in a title hunt.
Besides, he wears a sweater vest.

A lot of coaches could do the same and some really good coaches could exceed it. Auburn has these things that make them a contender every year:

1. SEC
2. SEC Money
3. Tradition
4. Fan Support
5. Facilities (an area that need to improve, but still adaquate).
6. Big Money Boosters

7. And finally and most importantly, Location , Location , Location. They are located in an area that within a 200 mile radius they can recruit every player they need to compete for a National Championship.

The problem with Auburn in the past is they always go after the cheap up and coming coach. The finally broke the cheap mode when they offered Gus the $49M contract.

Well, we are stuck with Gus for a few more years. I understand the economics and the contract has us in a corner. He will do just well enough to keep the mob at bay.

The SEC would be screwed if we could find a transfer every year that was worth the $180,000 asking price.

Auburn is going to be what they’ve always been... an 8-5 program with the occasional miracle season of contending for conference and national titles to keep the boogs’ delusion of being an elite team alive. They have 2 NCs in 120 years of football - 53 years apart - and they are both clouded with proof or suspicion of paying players.

he's good for a run at the National Title every 4-5 seasons.

He's had only one run, and that was six years ago, and as has already been mentioned, was due to two of the flukiest plays in the history of college football. If a Georgia DB had two brain cells to rub together, Gus would have never made the BCSCG. One run six years ago certainly doesn't qualify as "a run every 4-5 seasons.

In the five years after that, Gus had 5, 6, 5, 4, and 5 losses, and is on pace to likely have 4 losses this year, not counting a possible bowl loss. He also has a last-place finish in the division.

Stop with this shite. We won a National Championship with Gene Chizik and had an undefeated season with Terry Bowden. Had an undefeated season with Tuberville and went to Natty with Malzahn. The SEC would be screwed if we ever did hire a good coach.

shite. I never really thought of it like that.

I'm on the Bus. Leave Gus alone.

He's a great salesman honestly. He's too good of a Christian man that lives by the Creed that AU won't shitcan him. And he won't just have a bottom out season like Chiz to where they have to fire him.

It's a lovely situation to watch as a rival.....Auburn in perpetual coaching purgatory.

Kyle, can you pull up Saban's numbers against similar foes?

That guy has time on his hands, he does a great job with pulling stats.

I can't wait to see Saban's numbers in his last 45 games.

I mean but in the same token...Gus lost those games to those coaches...so not like we can say they don't do as well because they won vs Auburn, which removed Auburn's opportunity to be top 7

I disagree.... that is, if he stays HC at Auburn.

The man made it to the BCS Title Game in 2013... and let's not pretend it was due to "Chizik's recruits". Auburn was 3-9 the year prior and 8-5 the year before that.

In 2017, he made it back into the Title Hunt, beating #1 Georgia and #1 Alabama in a 15-day span. They were ranked #2 in the country, but ran out of gas having to face Georgia in a rematch.

If he can do it twice in five years, why would you think he will never do it again? He'll never be in the hunt on a year-to-year basis, but he's obviously proven he can do it.

I'd also like to see how he does when the schedule softens just a bit. He's now had to face the PAC 12 Champ two straight years in a row in addition to the tough SEC West + Georgia from the East. He drew Florida from the East this year too.

Things get a bit easier next year, dropping Florida and adding Kentucky.... also dropping Oregon and adding UNC.

Assuming they stuck with Gus, Auburn’s best days are behind it. Les is a prime example. Gus play calling and offensive scheme can not keep up with the “new” SEC. Gus will never change his offense bc it is the only thing he knows. The big boys figured out how to limit his scoring and his record reflects this.

Sadly for Gus our rivals got damn good at the same time he started as HC. We fuked. We also think Auburn is Alabama’s program.

I agree with you that they will likely always be what they will always be. However I give them a bit more credit in that its not a "miracle season" when they contend for a conference or national title every 5-7 seasons.

In 1983, they quite honestly got screwed out of a National Title

In 1993, they finished 11-0. Who knows what would have happened had they had the ability to play in the Postseason. I doubt they would have defeated UF if given a second chance, but who knows.

In 2004, they may or may not have been as good as USC. We'll never know, but they were undoubtedly one of the best two teams and were denied a chance to play for the Championship due to a faulty system.

In 2010, they won the National Title.

In 2013, they played for it again, coming up just short.

In 2017, they were #2 going into Conference Championship Weekend.

That's six seasons that they were in the mix in a 37-year period.... so in other words, once every 6 years or so.

I mean I agree that Auburn will always be Auburn. They are going to have major ups and downs and right when it looks like they have things worked out, they'll fall apart and change coaches, etc. But I do give them credit for contending for titles far more often than what most would expect out of them. When it happens every 6 years its not a "miracle" I guess is what I'm saying.
