Dabo Sweeney? One here not like the others.

Dabo Swinney had 1 Top 10 finish in his first 6 full seasons as head coach at Clemson. His first 4 seasons he went 29-19 and highest final ranking was #22 - the year they gave up 70 points to WVU in the Orange Bowl. Zero people would have said "Yea, Dabo Swinney is going to win a national title" going into 2015. Zero. Clemson's run from 2015-2020 was outside the range of any sort of reasonable expectation 6+ years into Dabo's regime.

Point isn't that we know for sure a coach will or won't, the point is it is pure silliness to proclaim any coach at a big school will "never" win anything. Especially one who has great players and finishes near the top a lot like Kirby.

It's just dumb.

Dabo Swinney from pre-2015 would have definitely been in that laughable conversation.

Not me. But then I never said Les Miles couldn't win a title in '07' either.

And frankly, Kirby Smart has gotten all this revisionist history thrown at him at the level we see because of 2017. Unlike Miles and even Chizek who won rather quickly after they got there.

I thought Dabo snuck up on everyone, in that Clemson doesn't exactely screem national power.

Ah, I saw Saban on your list but didn't realize it was just LSU.

Yep - good point.

I don't know how a guy like Kirby can put together one of the most talented rosters in college football history for the past 3 years and still not just lose, but get BLOWN OUT at least once or multiple times a season.

2017 vs AU 40-17
2018 vs LSU 36-16
2019 vs LSU 37-10 (following up a loss to unranked SC at home)
2020 vs Bama 41-24
then vs UF 44-28

There's no way this should happen given the sheer amount of talent assembled on those teams. Unless he pulls a 2019 Ed O and hires great coordinators to coach for him, I don't know how Kirby gets out of his own way to close out a season. I guess time will tell.

If Ed O can win one, the almost any coach can do it on the right year.

QB play has been the biggest part of this.

That's what Todd Monken is here for. Kirby can handle the defense.

Then win one. If you would win a title, we would not keep saying 1980.

No one knows the future but it's not exactly easy to win a national championship.

He's had plenty of time now to make all of the necessary adjustments to the program post-Richt.
Yep, and they've allowed our program to be a consistent top-10 finisher with a SEC championship, a three-peat appearance at the SECCG, a Rose Bowl playoff win, and an OT loss in the national championship game. He's improved our recruiting and has elevated our chances of competing for championships every year.

quote:

There's a reason it hasn't happened yet and that reason is he's not a great head coach.
Terrible take.

2016 - First year
2017 - SEC Champs, playoff win, and was a bad defensive play away from a national championship
2018 - Lost another close one to Bama who would go on to play in the title game (No one was beating Clemson)
2019 - No one was beating LSU
2020 - COVID asterisk + no one was beating Bama

It's clear we haven't had the best team in football 3 out of the 5 years he's been here though we've been getting better overall. In the two years that we had play-off capable teams, we lost close games to Alabama, who either went on to win it all or play in the championship game.

Bottom line is that no one rolls out the red carpet for any team. It's hard to win it all and even if you have the team that can do it, there are still other factors out of your control that determines the outcome.

Well, he would have a shot in 2022 and 2023 and maybe 2024, but what about 2025? Might be the bestest shite then.

I think the better question is if Kirby wears out his welcome at Georgia before Saban retires.

The person I was responding to asked me about coaches at specific programs.

I'm sorry but Toledo and Michigan State aren't built to win national championships in this modern era of college football, even if the Spartans did make it to the playoffs five years ago. Georgia on the other hand has absolutely no excuse not to be competing for national championships every year.
