One thing they could do is let DBs play bump and run coverage again. You know, where the DB can hit a receiver as often as they want down the field, but not hold him, until the pass is thrown.

I totally agree, the reason D. Smith is gonna win the Heisman is because noboy even touches a guy who is about 150 pds soaking wet.

I have seen more physical flag football games than what is being played by DBs in todays game.

When he played LSU I would have had Stingley line up on top of him and maul him every play and make the refs call 20 holding and pass interfernce calls.

Why let a guy run free and have 300 yds rec?

The quick passing game has made it where “winning the line of scrimmage” is not necessary on every play.

Pat Sullivan won a Heisman and a big stat game was 15 of 24 for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Now 300 yards passing is not really big news. Mac and Trask both had 400 yards in a big time game.

30 points used to be enough to win 80% of games.
Not sure how to bring defense back. Maybe narrowing the hashes might help a little?

Anyone think the rules will be changed to go back so that you can actually field a shut down defense again?

Growing up, I always liked defense the most.

I loved the 3rd down stops. The qb hurries that forced a pass breakup, throw away, big sack, or possible interception.

I loved the runs that got stuffed in the backfield. Remeber Clowney's hit against Michigan?

I miss punts that actually matter. Swinging the field postion and pinning them deep.

I dont know, alot of football just doesnt seem like football anymore.

Maybe its cause some of my first big memories of the Tide were of the 92 Defense.

I'm a high school DC and things have changed so much the last 5-7 years or so. Kids don't want to play defense anymore. They aren't physical anymore. You face all of this spread and RPO stuff, and then a Wing-T team pops up on your schedule. I now feel if I can hold.a team to 20 it's an accomplishment. Back in the day giving up an average of 20 PPG would get you canned.

Can start by letting defensive players hit WRs to dislodge the ball and let defenders smack the QB til his ribs hurt

LOS 1yard instead of 3 yards on pass plays.

Tighten up what’s called holding. Unless you stretch a jersey, wrap around them, or hook an arm it’s not holding.

Allow more contact downfield by secondary.

These are some things that they could do if they need to swing it back the other direction.

HUNH is situational now instead of a scheme with the substitution rules. It was almost rugby til they slowed it down. They realized football is not meant to be a continuous scrimmage which is what it was turning in to.

IMO , just do away with the outside the tackle box throw aways. Make the QB eat it, make a good throw or call that crap what it actually is... Intentional grounding.

Not sure if serious but for the past 15+ years the rule changes have only benefitted the offense. 4 or 5 receivers running around that basically cannot be touched. Rules that allow a QB to ground the ball if the defensive secondary does a good job. Everything benefits the offense nowadays. Have they really gotten too good???

The days of a 2 man backfield, 2 TE and 2 WR sets were pretty good times. Power football.

That’s how we played offense this year at A&M. Lots of benefits to it.

I think the next wave is going to place a premium on versatility - TEs that can line up with a hand in the dirt and block, or out wide and run routes. Backs who cab blocks and run and run routes. The idea is that the offensive personnel doesn’t let the defense adjust to power game or space game. There will be a premium on offensive personnel who are versatile.

I think the defenses will catch up eventually.

Clemson and Brent Venables seem to have something figured out and Auburn the past couple of years with Steele have been very good

Yeah, Venables is damn good. Wish he hadn't had the LSU game last year to learn from. I'm sure he's made some great adaptations based on that game.

The 9-6 game was the best game, I’ve ever seen in person. Even though we lost, I remember driving home and I couldn’t get the smile off my face. I knew I had just witnessed the two greatest defenses that would ever be on the same field.

The venables game plan should have spread throughout all of football and idk why it hasn’t. Recruit hard hitting safeties at put them at outside linebacker. You really only need a true linebacker at Mike. Let the hybrid guys play outside linebacker have 3 safeties on the field over the top and still two corners. Basically you play with either a 3-2-6 or 2-4-5. You can play with the 3-2-6 or dime as your base if you have elite line play but other than that your base should be a nickel package with 3 safeties. Venables is elite because they have such smart defensive players they have a huge defensive playbook they can go into. If you watch Clemson against an elite offense and you’ll see 3-1-7,1-5-5/1-4-6/2–4-5,3-3-5 etc and these exotic looks is what can really hurt these spread offenses the same way zone blitzes confused the run and shoot because these different defensive fronts makes those simple and easy reads that the rpo is based around, and makes it almost impossible to read pre snap

Saban asked the million dollar question back in 2013 or so if this is what we want football to become. He was ridiculed and mocked on this board.

Football is way better when the offense and defense are evenly matched.

Right now the playing field is heavily tilted to favor the offense.

Another thing hurting the defense is that the offenses are scoring more quickly and they're right back on the field. They're usually exhausted by the end of the game. The days when the offense would take 6 minutes to drive down the field helped immensely. Now its 2 minutes to score. If even that sometimes. I know I'm exaggerating a bit, but I absolutely believe that plays a big part

I miss when every big hit wasn’t flagged for targeting. Go back and watch games from 2005-2010 and they are way more physical. I remember 2006-07 Arkansas with Reggie Herring as DC dialing up delayed corner and safety blitzes and they’d destroy the QB. Don’t see that hardly anymore
