Anyone think the rules will be changed to go back so that you can actually field a shut down defense again?

Growing up, I always liked defense the most.

I loved the 3rd down stops. The qb hurries that forced a pass breakup, throw away, big sack, or possible interception.

I loved the runs that got stuffed in the backfield. Remeber Clowney's hit against Michigan?

I miss punts that actually matter. Swinging the field postion and pinning them deep.

I dont know, alot of football just doesnt seem like football anymore.

Maybe its cause some of my first big memories of the Tide were of the 92 Defense.

SEC had some good defenses even 2 years ago. We are becoming the big12.

Nope. I bet when the forward pass was introduced defensive coaches had a stroke. The Wing T with its multiple fakes and misdirection? They must have hated that. We won't even get into wishbone offense.

Defenses are slowly starting to adapt to the new types of offense. What is dooming the defenses more than anything is the way the game is being called on the field. The refs tend to favor the offenses.

Coaches like Saban have realized this and increasingly put the emphasis on offense.

I dont think it will change.

It's all about money. Games with lots of offense have always "sold tickets". Or nowadays keep people tuned in. Alot of people dont like the 9-6 type games unless it's your team playing.

So many rules are now in place to help the offense. Not sure if those will be rolled back ever. Also, the throws over the middle... receivers paid a price and a lot of good defenses could take that away with brutal hits. Those hits are in the past and never coming back.

They could do a few things to let CBs do more at the LOS with receivers. A bit more contact within 3-5 yards of LOS. Would also like to see the intentional grounding be called outside the pocket. QBs have enough rules advantages.

Overall I am with you. Nothing is more exciting that a game with good defense. That's when it gets loud in stadiums before, during, and after the play.

Afraid not. HUNH RPO stuff doesn't require a whole lot to be successful. OCs are often called geniuses because they have a QB who mindlessly makes one read at the LOS and decides whether to hand off, throw to their first read, or perhaps run the ball. It's designed to fatigue and confuse with speed and the continuous 40-second clock makes substitution patterns very difficult. The deck is stacked.

Allowing lineman 3 yards down the field on pass plays is one rule they could change that would make a huge difference.

I said this during the Bama-Florida game thread. How the hell do you score 52 points and it comes down to the last second? It’s probably here to stay because usually you can’t put the genie back in the bottle, but I’ll never get used to 100 point games.

The talent on D is still there. It's not like some other conference is raiding all the defensive talent out of the South like the SEC started doing to Texas and California 15 years ago.

I believe we have re-entered a period like the 1990's SEC when Florida was running an offense the rest of the conference had no idea how to stop. Except almost all the SEC is doing it. It is going to take 3-5 years for the defenses to adjust, and then things will somewhat level off with more balance. Defenses will start to limit the explosive passing plays on early downs and then when the offenses constantly find themselves in 3rd and longs, the offenses will start getting more conservative again with the run game being a priority.

One thing they could do is let DBs play bump and run coverage again. You know, where the DB can hit a receiver as often as they want down the field, but not hold him, until the pass is thrown.

Nowadays you can't touch a receiver 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Let the DBs knock these WRs off their routes again and that will help.

This year in particular it’s gotten to the point where your own team scoring is barely cause for celebration. The real game changers are turnovers, punts, or holding your opponent to a field goal. The average score per drive for some of these teams is well over 4 points even including garbage time. When these teams are backed up inside their own 10, they on average score better than a field goal.

We’ve now reached a point in this sport where forcing a punt is more exciting than scoring a touchdown. It hasn’t reached this point yet for all teams, but that is the direction things are headed. I think it is a problem.

I think the days of 46-41 and 53-48 are here to stay for a while.

Kiffin can slow down offenses pretty well with the “go the frick down” order. Once covid is gone his players can read lips.

****I actually like lane.

The days of a 2 man backfield, 2 TE and 2 WR sets were pretty good times. Power football. And back when a 4-3 and safety blitzes were common. When teams had safeties cheat up who could take heads off and tried to hurt someone constantly. In came the run and shoot... been different ever since.

So you’re mad that offensive players have gotten too good?
