I have noticed across college football that a bad habit has developed.

I can’t tell you how many players this year I have watched with their mouthpieces either hanging from their helmets, stuck in the side of their helmets, or the player is biting on the side of it and it’s stuck out of the side of their mouths when play starts. It is really becoming a problem across college football. I noticed JD doing it in several games this year including the game last night. I didn’t pay attention before the ball was snapped if he had his mouthpiece in correctly before he got tattooed but it wouldn’t shock me if he didn’t. The reason they give you a mouthpiece to wear in the first place is to keep a player from getting knocked out and prevent something like a concussion.
You can get a penalty for stupid rules like targeting. A team can get flagged for an equipment infraction if they have 2 players with the same number on the field at the same time. For some reason though they will not flag players for an equipment infraction for just the basic player safety stuff like wearing knee pads and having their mouthpieces in when the ball is snapped.

I’ve noticed that alot too. Not sure when it started happening, but very noticeable this year. As effecient and important as mouthpieces have become they really need to talk to teams about this.

Yeah. I mean talk about the most basic player safety concern that is it. A mouthpiece is maybe the 2 nd most important pice of equipment a player has and they let that go but will flag a defender because he wasn’t a contortionist and hit a QB in the helmet of went to low and hit him in the knee. I don’t get it.

I get ya, but how do QBs deal with it? Serious question, even if dumb. They call audibles and such, and then usually call for the snap. I say usually, because some now just clap for the snap. Seems like you'd get flagged reaching for your face (putting it in) once the team is set.

I blame Steph Curry

Why is this a problem to you? It’s not your fricking teeth that gets knocked out so who the hell cares?

Why don’t we let them choose to wear a helmet or not?

My thoughts exactly

The mouth guard stops concussions AND tongue biting. It helps absorb impact to the brain.

The custom mouth guards you can get from dentists allow you to talk pretty normally while wearing them. I wore one in HS and college and it wasn’t really an issue. They’re a million times better than the old school ones you boil in water and then bite down on

Yea there have been numerous players biting off their tongues every single game. It’s a huge problem in college football. Could be a big reason why most of the college football players talk like a 3 year old because they keep biting their tongues off from not wearing a mouthpiece.

So you overlooked the part about it preventing concussions and went straight to making a statement about biting tongue off.

It’s because these pansies don’t hit anymore. It’s basically flag football compared to 20-30 years ago.

It’s a fair point. I went back and looked to see it JD’s mouthpiece was in at the moment of contact, but Turner’s had replaced the lower half of JD’s facemask with his whole damned helmet so the view was obscured.

Agreed. Player should not be able to be "targeted" if he isn't even taking his own safety measures into account first

Yes. Mouthpieces are what’s most pressing with officiating today.
Mouthpieces.

Player safety? LMAO! Horse collar tackles are not allowed for “player’s safety “. However they somehow missed the one on Daniels last night in the first half. Turners hit on Daniels was the damn definition of targeting , but they somehow missed it too. Hell they didn’t even review it! I can’t believe you would make this post. It’s fricking comical!!

Yep. Loose chin straps and no mouthpiece is a bad mix. Especially when Dallas Turner is on the opposing defense

Most of the kids are wearing the smaller more comfortable ones while hanging the big pacifiers from their Facemasks
