In the latest USNews rankings UF is tied at 35 with Georgia Tech and Brandeis. I'm not a big fan of general rankings because I don't think they have much practical use but they are a good measure of "prestige," whatever that's worth.

Either way no other school in Florida is even close to UF.

Well if we're going to talk tiny liberal arts colleges, Rollins is the best LAC in the state. Difficult comparison to make vs a national university though. They're kinda in their own spot off to the side.

How sad is it that a school as terrible as ole miss is the best school in the state

I work at Ole Miss, and while I’d love it if it were true that we are the highest rated academically, It’s not. Millsaps has the best entering freshman statistics and lowest acceptance rate. It’s also ranked ahead of the rest of the universities/colleges here in all the usual places like US News and Forbes.

Texas
Let's just put Rice in thier own national category and say the rest of Texas. I would have put the edge in a lot of fields to Aggie and that includes petroleum enginnerring. I worked with a lot of Aggies, good hands, real Americans. To all my Tejas friend, hello commrade Leon, not real, not American now kneel B*tch Our Flag is going up and we are singing the national anthem!

LSU beat the Hell out of them, Please!

graduated from UNC - Chapel HILL better than a community college

Best academic cheaters in the history of the NCAA!

Miami = private
Florida = public

Not that Miami is not solid academically, just Florida is the ONLY school in the state with AAU status. If you really graduated UNC, you should know this as they are AAU as well.

This is the SEC footprint, and AAU schools in that footprint
Alabama = NONE
Arkansas = NONE
Florida = University of Florida
Georgia = Georgia Tech (former SEC) while UGA is AAU level, Tech was the research school
Kentucky = NONE
Louisiana = Tulane University (former SEC)
Missouri = University of Missouri
Mississippi = NONE
South Carolina = NONE (Taters are not even close to AAU so hush Tillman)
Tennessee = Vanderbilt University
Texas = Texas A&M University

I am guessing Florida Ag in Lake City but that was merged with 3 others to create the University of Florida about a century ago. It was about this time that Florida became the white, male college and Florida State became the white female college. I think Florida A&M was the first black college.

AAU membership has little meaning when it comes to undergraduate academics. It is purely a reflection of how intensively the campus pursues research activities which are far more reflective of graduate school capabilities than undergrad.

Many very capable smaller undergraduate liberal arts colleges would be considered among the best in the nation but contribute very little research and have only a small (if any) graduate school.

The service academies are undergrad institutions so I do get your point. That being said, education and research are the cornerstones of higher education so any UNIVERSITY should be research based in both graduate and undergraduate education. Small COLLEGES can continue to excel in specific education and nobody fails them for not being AAU.

While the service academies may be one side of the view, a place like BYU may be the opposite when research is discouraged or based more on religion than science. While an ELE meteor might be gods plan to wipe out the earth I still want some nerd at Cal Tech figuring out a way to stop it.

Honestly, both major schools in SC are pretty average. They're each good in a select few programs, but neither is on the level of UNC, for instance. shite for the best education if it was my kid, I'd send them to Furman or Wofford.

Neither is on the level of a school that had such widespread academic fraud that it should have lost its accreditation? I would hope not!

AAU status is diminished when you consider a bunch of mediocre midwestern schools have it

Auburn is the #1 ranked school in Alabama.
It’s not a AAU school
It is a Carnegie 1 school and is only 1 of 2 in the State. The other being UAB.
My understanding is AAU is by invite only and all AAU schools are Carnegie 1 schools as well.
