UT should be patient with Jones. It is hard to recruit at UT as well as he has, although he has been a bit lucky with the influx of in-state talent and legacies. I will state that he isn't a very good X's and O's coach (He did some of the dumbest shite I have seen a HC do last yr), but if he keeps getting the talent, that won't matter too much. Plus, it seems like he has surrounded himself with a few solid assistants. UT should give him 2 more years at minimum. If they aren't bowling by 2015, he isn't the answer.

The dumbest thing he did was start Peterman in the Swamp. However, if you'd seen Worley in the games leading up to it including the Oregon game, you'd realize Worley needed to be benched. Jones simply had no idea, imo, how hostile the swamp is going into it (he had to learn and I'm sure he did). Peterman made the mistake worse by continuing to play after he broke his thumb but he probably didn't realize it was broken.

Pretty much everything else, including the playcalling during the Vandy game, can be accounted for by injuries and lack of depth.

You say this in every TN thread, and it is stupid.

After few recruiting classes I'm almost certain he'll eventually end up winning 8,9,10 games a season, (2003-2007 Fulmer style or current Mark Richt) but can he compete for championships like Meyer, Saban, and Miles? I have no idea at this point.

I will give Tennessee this; they have some playmakers at wide receiver.

Marquez North
Pig Howard
Jason Croom
LaVon Pearson
Josh Malone

+ the 2 deep guys all make WR, with out a doubt our deepest position. I wouldn't be surprised to see every guy mentioned play in the NFL. Assuming Howard gets reinstated in about a week and a half.

On another note, never did we see anything last year that resembled the foolishness of Dooley.

If Butch ever pisses away a football game like Dooley did then year 3 could always be a possibility.

Dooley could have gotten another year if it weren't his mental breakdowns in coaching. You think Spurrier sabotaged himself in last year's game against UT? I compell you to take a look at Doolander's baffling decisions in the '12 Missouri game.

I've never wanted to fight a TV until that moment.

The Peterman shite was a disaster, and Jones kept throwing it on 3rd and long, which was dumb.

I haven't been a big fan of Jones X's and O's wise going back to the Cinci days. Last yr just kind of cemented it.

I do think he is a heck of a recruiter and the talent he is bringing in will mask some of his flaws.

TN just needs to be patient IMO. I know that is asking a lot from Vol fans though.

he's made some other strange calls... the 4th down call in second half of the Auburn game was pretty bad... then the next series he punted after AU scored a TD. The game was still relatively close at that time, IIRC.

The poor OL play given all that talent is another curious situation.... not all players buy into a new coach and scheme, but there aren't many good excuses for being that bad up front on offense.

Depends on this season. Id say if he tanks this season, next year is his make it or break year. If he does mediocre(5-7 wins) this and onward, he has 4 to 5 years. If he does better than that, 5+.

also (and I think jones knows this), he's going to have to shake up his staff, especially on defense, after this season if he wants to compete...

If he doesn't make a bowl game this year, and he starts shaking up the staff, it might get ugly.

I know you're an Aubbie so you're going to disagree but I like Martinez and especially Thigpen. I'm not sure Jancek will work out as DC but we had almost zero talent on defense last year to work with so it will be interesting to see.

They're in the Top 10 again right now, so it looks like he'll keep it up.

Yea, Tommy Thigpen is great for getting the players there, but they'll waste away quickly if someone else isn't there to coach them.

FWIW, Janzek is who i'm talking about as the main guy who might not be cut out for this league.

I think you may be right. It's going to be hard to judge him again this year with how inexperienced we are. 2015 will be his make it or break it season.

4th down calls are statistically more successful despite going against traditional wisdom. We weren't going to win that game so I have no problem with taking that kind of risk.

Our oline bought in but they had a couple of things happen: 1. they were never the same after the Bama game (remember those guys had started every game of their career with little substitution for a breather and were beat the hell up from a brutal arse schedule - they were tired and injured) 2. our oline had never really learned to run block because of Dooley/Bray/Chaney (nor had they had the same coach for two consecutive years their entire career). All Bray ever did was throw. 3. when Worley went down Dobbs opened up the play book and unfortunately our oline was not very good at the new blocking schemes - Tiny false started so many times after the Bama game it was pathetic (now we know why since it's come to light he was hurt) but those false starts killed any hope of giving our freshmen a chance to get a drive going. Mental errors plagued the team the latter games of the season.

I'll give them this though, despite mental errors being a bane the last 4 games or so, they didn't quit. They were exhausted, they made mistakes because of it but they didn't quit. Those very same players would've quit under Dooley - each and every year.

mizzou game was probably the closest they came to quitting... that game was ugly and over by halftime. I really thought UT would go up there and play well.

last year's schedule was absolutely brutal, though... add in the zero quality depth left by dooley and it was a recipe for a rough year.
