Herschel Walker became eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He never has been a serious candidate.

Every few years the former running back argues he is a Hall of Famer. He made his case again recently.

“If you look at my stats, I should be in the Hall of Fame,” Walker told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “My stats showed that I produced.”

Walker rushed for 8,225 yards and added 4,859 receiving yards and 5,084 kickoff return yards in his 12 NFL seasons.

Only a handful of running backs, including Terrell Davis and Larry Csonka, who played after the 1970 merger have a bust in Canton with fewer rushing yards than Walker had in the NFL.

But Walker’s 18,168 all-purpose yards rank 12th in NFL history. He was second to Walter Payton when he retired.

“Let’s just forget about my USFL days,” Walker said. “Look at my stats in the NFL. Look at my combined yards. Plus, I had 500 some catches (512). Those stats are good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s what people need to look at when they start talking about numbers and all that.”

Actually, since it is the Pro Football Hall of Fame and not the NFL Hall of Fame, why should Walker’s USFL numbers be forgotten?

Walker, the 1982 Heisman winner, rushed for 5,562 yards with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL from 1983-85. That gives Walker 13,787 rushing yards in pro football. Only six rushers in NFL history have more.

So the two-time Pro Bowler has a case. But then, so do a lot of players who aren’t in the Hall of Fame.

Herschel can't enter the HOF until Georgia wins a title without him.

Eh. I’m all about the legend of Herschel Walker. That guy is SEC Royalty with the R in big CAPS.

Herschel screwed up when he took our current President’s money and opted out of his senior season to play in a league of scrubs. And them stats don’t count no matter whoever tells you they should. He had a good career but his trade was the most value Dallas got out of him.

Warren Moon's CFL numbers are on his exhibit, same with Kelly, Young, White and others USFL numbers.

Good lord. Typical UGA stunt. " I can't earn it so either give it to me or make it easier". Its same reason so many of their fans want to expand the playoffs. One of his personalities probably believes he should be given an MMA title. Hell he did the same thing trying to go back to UGA after he decided to go pro.

My God a UT fan trash talking UGA, go deal with your abortion of a program and strut that late come back win over basketball powerhouse Indiana.

Comparing him to Walter Payton is not a good reference. Walter Payton meant much more to his team than Herschel did. I think you have to take those intangibles into consideration. He's not getting in for the same reason Dale Murphy is not getting into the Baseball HOF. Good, but not great stats.

He should, it's not the NFL Hall of Fame. Look at his pro numbers and it's not even debatable. I think he has something like 2500 more apy than Walter Payton. It's not herschels fault the prime of his career was in a different pro league than the NFL

Walker should have not opted for the USFL. That said the USFL had a good product. I wish it could have survived.

Walker in 12 years

8,225 rushing
4859 receiving

Fournette in 3 years

2631 rushing
1009 receiving

And no he shouldn't. Walker has just average numbers for being in the league for 12 years!

Trump didn't own the Generals then.

Yes it is. No one could sign that USFL contract except him.

Why not?RB have the worst shelf life of any position in pro football and he made
$2 million his 1st year alone...by far the highest paid player in pro FB.

No brainier IMO
