I hate it for Paul but he should have told them no. The game had passed him by.

Ray Tanner

No further explanation needed.

Glad both are out of their positions now. Paris next, but for some reason he gets another year.

LEADERSHIP CHANGE IN BASEBALL

Statement from Paul Mainieri

Jeremiah Donati and I have agreed that the baseball program will be better served with new leadership. I take full responsibility for the win/loss record of the baseball program over the 80 games I have served as head coach.

When Ray Tanner invited me to come out of three years of retirement to coach again, my goal was to work with young people again and restore the South Carolina program to greatness with a return to Omaha. My staff and I have worked diligently in an attempt to accomplish that goal. Unfortunately, that goal has not materialized as quickly as I would have liked and will take more time than I had anticipated and that is time that I just don’t have at my age.

I want to make it clear that Ray Tanner, Jeremiah Donati, President Amiridis, and the university leadership have supported me and the baseball program throughout my tenure. In short, I did not get the job done at a level that I expected, or the university deserves.

As I go into retirement again (and for the final time), I reflect on how fortunate I have been to do what I Iove most – coaching college baseball and trying to impact young lives – for more than 40 years at five wonderful institutions. St. Thomas University, the United States Air Force Academy, the University of Notre Dame, LSU, and the University of South Carolina, will always hold a special place in my heart. The young men that I have had the honor to coach will always be foremost in my thoughts. It is my hope that their success in life and contributions to society will be my lasting legacy.

It is time for me to rejoin my family and be the best husband, father, and grandfather that I can be.

Paul Mainieri

statement from USC AD & Mainieri

I'll be happy to buy PM and adult beverage or wine anytime our paths may cross - he can buy his meal with his buyout $

If Mainieri was hired to destroy the program, he did a fantastic job.

Dunno if it'll be Schnall. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Powell. The masochist in me expects Monte Lee.

there were times last season I wondered if RT hired PM as a parting FU to the group of BoT responsible for RT being removed from AD - and bury the program - and nobody would be wiser considering all of RT's other men's hires that made absolutely no sense - including Beamer -

Schnall.
I have reservations about him - but he's clearly an upgrade to both Kingston and PM - though I believe Matt Williams was a huge factor in CCU's run to Omaha last summer - and the way things ended for Matt lone year after Kingston was removed I don't anticipate he's inclined to return to Columbia anytime soon - Ray's path of destruction knows no bounds - which sucks because Matt and his Dad are each highly respected in SC HS baseball -

I actually kinda lean toward him over Schnall - which is an incredibly unpopular position with likely our entire fan base

if he wins the SEC and Hoover as interim this season - he can have a 1 season flier in 2027 to earn a bigger contract in 2028 - but yeah it's a painful thought he gets installed after the past 80 games -

Does South Carolina just not have any money in the NIl era?

They are awful at the big 3 men’s sports.

Does women’s basketball get all the money?

Alex Murdaugh was probably one of their biggest boosters and he’s locked up for life

I actually do think we have the lowest basketball NIL money in the SEC. For what goes to baseball? I’m not sure, but bringing a dinosaur out of retirement in this day and age was administrative malpractice.

Well, if he still has some, he doesn't need it anymore.

Living in Conway, I don't think Schnall will end up here. The Coastal folks will give him a raise and he can live comfortably here with less stress and lower fan expectations. Our job comes with serious expectations and serious obstacles given our lowly status and the strength of our conference.

It should be next to impossible for a baseball AD to botch a baseball hire so badly, but here we are

Mainieri was clearly well past his prime when he "retired" at LSU several years ago, he was never made for this era of college baseball. It was always going to be a bad hire when they did it.

agree with ya - he's kinda a made man there with the Omaha trip last season - I know Oxendine is back around - and I suspect Gilmore would have to give his blessing for Schnall to take our job - because Gary reasons

that's my reservation about Schnall - I honestly am weary he'd be Tony SF Giant Vitello with less self-discipline - and the SEC grind would do to him what it did to Holbrook when he became antagonistic towards the noise -

the great news is gents - we're not being held hostage anymore
