LSU is a much more accomplished program compared to Tennessee.

That's not true. They are very neck and neck. There is an argument for both.

Unanimous Natties: Advantage LSU
SEC Titles: Advantage Tennessee
Wins All Time: Advantage Tennessee
Winning Percentage: Advantage Tennessee
Bowl Games: Tie
Playoff Appearances: Tie
Head-to-Head: Advantage Tennessee

If unanimous natties are all you are counting, then sure, put LSU ahead. But then I guess that means Minnesota is better than both

Either way, LSU and Tennessee are light years ahead of Auburn lol

Interesting, but that link says it's updated up to the 2012 season. Totally missing the UGA heyday.

It wasn't that long ago UT had more wins

From the day Doug Dickey retired as AD in 2002 until the day Danny White became AD in 2021, UT’s football program was ran by a revolving door of idiots, boobs, and meddling boosters.

First they let Fulmer and his good buddies put it on cruise control because he thought he had a job for life, his last contract had built in extensions and raises for 8 win seasons.

Then came the Kiffin debacle, then they went a complete 180 from Kiffin and hired Doofey Dooley, then Lyle Jones, then that inbred goof Pruitt. After that string of shite, Heupel looks like the second coming of Bob Neyland in comparison.

Nearly 20 years wandering the college football desert would have killed a lesser program and it will damn sure get you passed by rivals. It never should have happened to a program with the resources and support available in Knoxville

Pretty sure Auburn won in 2010 solely on the back of Cam.

In other words, the Haslams began intervening.

Surprisingly good thread. Generally a lot less trolling than expected.

Don’t think it will go more than 3-4 pages, but the replies have been substantial & interesting to read.

Have an upvote.

Dooley

That dude just couldn’t get it done, but I recall him getting some pretty awful breaks on more than one occasion.

Possible his tenure & the general perception of him as an HC plays out very differently in an alternate dimension where a few calls or bounces go the other way.

This was an era where recruiting wasn’t just how big your budget was. As a LSU fan, I can relate to the butterfly effect.

Anyway he inherited a dumpster fire & I recall his teams always played hard. Unfortunate.

Well yeah, Tennessee has yet to seriously compete in the 21st century.

Unanimous Natties: Advantage LSU

This is a pretty big deal. LSU has four National Titles to Tennessee's two. If you're going to claim Tennessee is a better all time program, they better be way out front in the other categories. LSU having double the number of National Titles is tough to overcome.

quote:

SEC Titles: Advantage Tennessee

Yawn. Half of Tennessee's SEC titles were before integration. 11 of 13 were before the SEC Championship Game era. Four of the 13 were shared titles... two shared by three teams. Is a 3-way tie for an SEC title in a 10-team SEC as impressive as winning an SEC title game when the SEC had 14 teams? The answer is no.

quote:

Wins All Time: Advantage Tennessee

Are all wins equal? No. LSU has 104 wins all-time against Final AP ranked opponents... Tennessee has 100. Close, but LSU has more quality wins all-time... Tennessee certainly not making up the gap of having half the number of national titles.

quote:

Winning Percentage: Advantage Tennessee

Redundant

quote:

Playoff Appearances: Tie

LOL. James Madison also is tied with you here. Putting a category for something that's barely been a thing in the sport is silly.... and when you look at Tennessee's resume that year on the whole, it becomes even more of a joke. Also, wouldn't a 2-team or 4-team playoff appearance be way more impressive than a 12-team playoff appearance?

quote:

Head-to-Head: Advantage Tennessee

Only 34 meetings ever.

LSU has double the number of national titles, and the majority of their natties and SEC titles were won during eras in which obtaining them was far more impressive/difficult. LSU has more weeks ranked in the AP Poll.... more wins over Final ranked opponents, etc.

As someone said earlier... the gap between Alabama and everyone else is massive. Georgia too is beginning to separate themselves from the pack a bit. LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, and Florida are relatively close however it's pretty obvious that LSU should be at the front of that pack.

Nah. Dude couldn't recruit. Butch had to bring in walk-on's to field a full O-line.

UGA - three national titles as #2 AP finish in 1942 is BS

You do understand that Texas only has 3 AP titles, too, right? Your 1970 title is crap since you lost the Cotton Bowl and finished #3 in the AP, so if our 1942 title is bogus because we were #2 in AP what does that say about your 1970 title in which you finished #3?

And Paul Brown is considered the "father of modern professional football" but everyone knows the Browns are the laughing stock of the NFL.
This is crazy being the one to inform an Ohio State fan about this - because I assume you're from Ohio - but the franchise Paul Brown had his most success with (4x AAFL championships, 2x pre-Super Bowl NFL championships) is now in Baltimore. They've been pretty successful there.

The school Neyland was famous for coaching is still in Knoxville, Tennessee. So pick a better analogy.

Tier 2: UGA, Tenn, LSU
Tier 3: Auburn and Florida

This looks right tier wise.

I can't tell if you're trolling or retarded.

If its the latter I'll explain it to you.

The Cleveland Browns fired Paul Brown long long long before that team moved to Baltimore

Paul Brown then formed the Bengals.

All the championships he won in Cleveland are still part of Cleveland's history not Baltimore's.

That franchise moved to Baltimore, where they've won more championships.

Today's Cleveland Browns are slightly older than the Texans.

None of this can be argued.

This is the crux of it all. And while most people focus on Tennessee being bad since about 2005, the program was already "down" since about 1973... ie integration with the exception of the pinnacle of the Fulmer years.

Since 1973:

National Titles:
10- Alabama
4- Oklahoma
3- Georgia
3- LSU
3- Florida
1- Auburn
1- Texas
1- Tennessee

SEC Standings:
.751- Alabama (303-100-2)
.696- Georgia (283-123-3)
.652- Florida (267-142-1)
.572- LSU (216-161-5)
.555- Tennessee (215-172-5)
.555- Auburn (221-177-5)

SEC Titles
19- Alabama
10- Georgia
8- Florida
7- Auburn
7- LSU
5- Tennessee

Weeks in AP Poll:
698- Alabama
698- Oklahoma
600- Georgia
574- Florida
554- Texas
526- LSU
468- Auburn
440- Texas A&M
437- Tennessee

Wins over Final AP Ranked Teams:
123- Alabama
101- Oklahoma
95- Florida
89- Georgia
78- Texas
74- LSU
73- Auburn
64- Tennessee
47- Texas A&M
45- Arkansas
39- Ole Miss

AP Top 25 Finishes
38- Alabama
37- Oklahoma
34- Georgia
30- Texas
27- LSU
27- Florida
26- Auburn
23- Tennessee
21- Texas A&M

We're going on well over 5 decades now in which Tennessee is easily just the 6th best program in the SEC with two new programs coming into the league that are leaps and bounds ahead. During the past 50+ years there are easily 8 current SEC programs that have been more successful than Tennessee.

It's hard to claim second best program when you're not even Top 8 of current SEC schools over a 50+ year period.

That math just doesn't work.

That franchise moved to Baltimore 33 years after Paul Brown was fired.

I honestly have no idea what point you are even trying to make.
