How many SEC schools have even had black head coaches?

I think Mel Tucker will be the one hired at LSU and will be the 4th consecutive coach to win a title here. I’m hoping to see Michigan St win some big games but fall just short so Tucker wants to move on.

It's possible. I like Tucker, and think he would do a good job.

How many black head coaches have ever coached at the schools where you acually have a real chance to win one, I would say very few if any.

How is this stupid? I’m obviously asking college football on an sec board

It really isn't a stupid question per say, people are just having knee jerk reactions because you mentioned race and that's what they do here.

Whether people want to acknowledge it, there's still a stigma in the sport regarding black head coaches on a level higher than high school. Hell, it was only recently where it became widely acceptable that a black player could be QB. People don't want to call it what it is and say "resume" or "talent" should be the hiring factor, and they should... the problem is that a black coach could have the same resume and still be passed over because of racial bias.

In 200 years, professor Goldberg will tell his students Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryan, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer were all black men.

Or it could just be that the elite head coaches in college football happen to be white. The law of large numbers does lead to that fact after all. Black people are between 12-13% of the population. The percentage of coaches is 10.77%. It’s not terribly far off from the pure overall demographic. And also, just because you can play football does not mean that you’re fit to be a head coach. That’s an important reminder when the argument of the percentage of players’ race is brought up.

African American head football coach ever won a national championship?

Blacks account for roughly 13% of the US population. The likelihood of that happening is pretty slim.

Also, bringing race up in a topic like this just comes across as race baiting. Truth of the matter is, the best person (coach) should be hired based off being the most qualified for the job.

If hiring a black man is the best for the job, then great, he deserves the opportunity. But, as stated above, blacks account for roughly 13% of the US population. You will never see that many black coaches on the sidelines as a head coach.

On top of all that, winning a national championship is a difficult task. The chances of winning a natty, unless you are at a school with a great recruiting base and tradition is slim.

Ever? How about this year?

Dino Babers at Syracuse, James Franklin at Penn State, David Shaw at Stanford, Herm Edwards at Arizona State, Mel Tucker at Michigan State, Mike Locksley at Maryland, Jimmy Lake at Washington, Karl Dorrell at Colorado -- if any of their teams wins their respective P5 conference with an undefeated or one loss season they have a chance to get in the CFP and win a national title.

If race doesn’t matter, why does he want to be he first black coach to win one?

Statistically, you should see about 13% of head coaches, then, be African American; but you don't.

So you would agree that it should only go up about 2% and then all is well? Because that’s all it’s off from a percentage standpoint

What percentage of American's have a four year degree? I believe a four year degree is required to be a D-I coach at an FBS school. That 13% is dwindled down even further if a four year degree is indeed required.

Shh. Stop using logic! It should be higher than the demographics percentage because the media says so!

Mel Tucker has no business being considered for the LSU job. His resume is far too thin. He hasn't even coached a bowl game yet.

That's just disingenuous. You don't have a real chance at winning one unless you're pulling in top 5 classes.

If Charlie Strong was a good coach he could have possibly done it. But he put together a string of some pretty bad classes rankings wise on top of being straight up bad.

Mel Tucker will get a chance at LSU I guess.

don’t think race should have anything to do with it. At all. Coach should be hired based off of pure resume.

True, but as you know it hasn’t always been the case.
