Jimbo's contract does not have an offset clause like that, he is literally owed the full buyout no matter what. So he could get canned at A&M and retire, while still getting paid 25% of his full remaining contract within 60 days of his termination - then yearly payments up until 2030 or whenever his current contract expires.

Holy frick

What the hell was A&M thinking? Not a single lawyer or accountant stepped in and said "This is fricking insane, we're not doing this ".

Please tell me there's something in the fine print that allows for reducing the buyout obligation.

Has anybody ever put themselves in a position of a $50M buyout still several years down the road?

The fact that you think Auburn was still paying Chizik a month shy of 2021 is remarkably dumb.

Don't believe everything your Bammer buddies tell you at the plant. Auburn hasn't paid Chizik a dime in seven years.

My apologies. Looks like they paid him in a lump sum. I stand corrected. Sorry for triggering you. Ironically I have far more Auburn friends than Bama.

Still wrong. They paid him through the end of his contract in 2015.

It's a wild thing that gets thrown out about Auburn for whatever reason that Auburn is always paying like 3 coaches at all times when we've had less turnover than a lot of other SEC programs. It's just untrue.

I don't like Jimbo or A&M, but I think A&M will be better served by giving Jimbo a few years than spending tens of millions to go roll the dice again.

Jimbo isn't a bad coach (he's not an elite coach either), he'll stabilize and likely win 9 games in the next 2-3 years.

LSU retaining Les Miles in 2015, albeit he was fired 4 games into the following season. But the optics and politics behind his buyout in 2015 is the main reason that 2015 A&M game wasn't his last.

However, that said, with the TV money now, buyouts and coaching contracts just seem like playing with monopoly money.

Even Auburn, while still paying Chizik's large buyout, canned Malzahn right after a big extension and huge buyout. I can't fathom how a program with any pride can retain a coach with 0% fan support purely because it can't afford otherwise.

How has that worked out for Auburn?

You will reap what you sow when you give a coach a raise for 8 wins a year. Rebuilding, we young, QB whisperer, #1 recruiting class, we buy what we want, 1939

took a walk at the park this morning. Lots of Tulane gear on. One of those beautiful days in New Orleans.

I thought it wasn’t safe to walk in NOLA according to these boards?

Us Ags can only hope Jimbo has the ability to disrupt & change his thinking. Fire himself as OC and focus on what he does best. There are ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSES for the on the field product. Unless you listen to the moron, Billy Luicci, at TexAgs.

What does he do best? He’s clearly a horrible culture coach based on how he left FSU and player issues he’s had at A&M.

Now they can’t fire him for years. Brutal situation. I feel bad for the Aggies.

Why? They deserve this. Those dipshits puff their chests out relentlessly and pretend to be elite every offseason no matter how much reality proves them wrong

Right, his resume is much worse, and Michigan State is more disadvantaged than Texas A & M. I have seen unverified posts online that mostly one booster or donor is funding the contract, but the prospect of firing Mel if he flops would be terrible optics.
