It drops after December 1st.
December 2nd he only has 3 years worth of contract money to buyout. As it currently stands he has 4 years.

Auburn would owe 75% of that.

Year: Base salary + personal endorsement rights + radio, internet & TV rights
2018: $500,000 + $3,100,000 + $3,100,000 = $6,700,000
2019: $500,000 + $3,150,000 + $3,150,000 = $6,800,000
2020: $500,000 + $3,200,000 + $3,200,000 = $6,900,000
2021: $500,000 + $3,250,000 + $3,250,000 = $7,000,000
2022: $500,000 + $3,300,000 + $3,300,000 = $7,100,000
2023: $500,000 + $3,350,000 + $3,350,000 = $7,200,000
2024: $500,000 + $3,400,000 + $3,400,000 = $7,300,000
Auburn would owe 75% of that.

4 loss Gus is still on track this year. Lose to Bama and A&M and beat State.
Death, taxes and Gus losing 4 games are all that is a given in life.

Yet he somehow is one game under .500 against saban. Inept Gus.

Most Auburn fans don’t understand his contract details. With the buyout dropping soon and a looming potential iron bowl beatdown there’s a strong chance a change is made.
Here is an article on his buyout. It assumes that he gets fired on December 31 of any given year.
Here's a table of Malzahn's annual salary, remaining balance after that year and the buyout after that year. The buyout assumes, for simplicity's sake, that he'd be fired on Dec. 31 of that year. For example, as noted above, if fired on Dec. 31, 2018, he'd be owed 75 percent of the remaining $42.3 million, or $31.725 million. If fired on Dec. 31, 2019, he'd be owed $26.625 million.
Year Salary Remaining Buyout
2018 $6,700,000 $42,300,000 $31,725,000
2019 $6,800,000 $35,500,000 $26,625,000
2020 $6,900,000 $28,600,000 $21,450,000
2021 $7,000,000 $21,600,000 $16,200,000
2022 $7,100,000 $14,500,000 $10,875,000
2023 $7,200,000 $7,300,000 $5,475,000
2024 $7,300,000 $0 $0
As you can see, if he is fired this year his remaining buyout would be $21 Million

Wow, I thought he only had 3 years remaining on the contract after this season. Yeah, 75% of 28 million puts it at 21 million for this year.
Damn. That’s steep. South Carolina dished out 15.3 million to Will Muschamp, so 21 million isn’t totally unfeasible, but unlikely.

True, 3-1 at voodoo JHS and 0-3 at BDS.
Saban straight up blew the 13 Iron Bowl with BAD coaching decisions. You can thank Mac Jones for giving Auburn a win in 19 in a game Bama should have won by 14 plus.

The inability to understand Gus' contract is shocking.

bama never loses. They just beat themselves.
You fail to acknowledge that Inept Gus went toe-to-toe with saban for the entire game to be in a position to win it.

Not with 4 years left on the original. If somebody wants to come take him, THEY can pay the buyout.

Again, that's just for Gus. You will have the entire staff's buyout. You will have the buyout of the new HC and his staff. It would easily be $30M before the new HC and the new staff get their contracts.

Well, if you throw two pick sixes that gives the other team 14 points and you lose by 3, you kinda did beat yourselves.

Yeah. Our defense didn’t have anything to do with that
Now a fumble in the open field is a different story.

This time next year it drops to ~15 million then. I miscounted thinking he only had 3 years remaining instead of 4.
This is the question the administration/boosters will have to answer, is 6 million dollars worth waiting a year for the inevitable firing? The damage it will do with recruiting is already surfacing to defcon 1 levels (39th ranked in recruiting, set up for one of the worst classes we’ve had). Is 6 million dollars worth another awful class in 2022 along with the energy being drained from the program?
I guess we’ll find out soon.
