Not even close

Saban by a mile

Even with over-signing & "roster management", Saban started every season with 85 schollies just like everyone else, the same can't be said for the single guy that is responsible for about 85% of the NCAA rulebook as we know it today, that would be Bear Bryant, the cheatingest Coach in the history of organized sports

Coach Bryant did not have unlimited scholarships. Early on maybe but most of the time There was a limit of 80 over a 2 year period with no more than 45 in a single year. That was changed when Ray Perkins took over. He was robbed of 2 titles by the bias for Notre Dame.

60-3 and three national championships in his last five seasons makes it highly plausible Osborne would have won more. Of course, people once thought Saban would keep winning championships too but since 2015 it's really just been one lucky hail mary pass that's kept Saban relevant. He had a nice run though and is certainly a top three coach.

I am by no means saying that Bear > Saban but the above arguments that have often been used against Bryant when comparing him to more modern coaches are really foolish. All of Bryant's legendary contemporaries from Bud Wilkinson to Ara Parseghian to Woody Hayes were all playing under the same set of rules.

Bryant never had a ten year run like Saban's. Sure he dominated the SEC but from 2009-2015, nothing Bryant did at Alabama is comparable. 4 national titles, 4 SEC titles and numerous first round picks to go along with All Americans, all in a seven year span.

In modern college football, no one else can come close. In the history of the game, not even Bryant can touch it.

Uhhh I’ll go with neither.

One was great at dressing like a neck beard - fedora wearing cuck. And the other was great at squandering talent.

Maybe neither. Both could have won @ K. St when the old guy who won and won til he was ancient was there but maybe not like him. But as a pure football coach between the two.....Bryant.

That is a popular misconception. Bryant worked under serious scholarship limitations for a long period when at Alabama. In fact the entire SEC did. For instance the Big 8 (Nebraska-Oklahoma) could sign 10 more per year than could the SEC and the Big 10 could sign more. Not sure about the Pacific Coast thing. And he independents were out of control since they could sign UNLIMITED! For instance when Johnny Majors won the national title at Pitt he was bringing in upwards of and in some cases OVER a HUNDRED kids a year. As did Jackie Sherrill there. That's why there were Indy power houses then like Syracuse, etc. They only wanted to join a conference when the NCAA established universal controls. Can you imagine Bryant or Saban with 120 scholarships a year....LOL!

Edit to say Bobby Dodd's real reason for taking Georgia Tech out of the SEC was to sign more players than Georgia and Alabama. IOW, SEC scholarship limitations.

Neither One: It's Louisiana's own

Eddie Robinson - Grambling State

Record 408-165-15

Sent more than 200 players to the NFL.

quote:

In 1941 the 22-year old Robinson assumed his duties as head football coach at Grambling State. The days of assistant coaches, offensive and defensive coordinators, and specialty coaches were long in the future, so Robinson did everything: he taught offense and defense, mowed the football field, fixed sandwiches for road trips through towns that would not serve blacks in restaurants, taped his players' sore joints, and even wrote game stories for the newspapers. He had strict standards of personal conduct and educational achievement for his players. In his first year the team went 3–5–1, but the following season—during which he recruited new players and dismissed those who did not live up to his expectations—the Tigers had a perfect 9–0 season, going unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon.

I never saw Bear coach but I find it hard to believe he'd have the same success over the last 10-12 years as Saban. Bear had unlimited scholarships and could manipulate the game way easier than Saban.

People say this but perhaps fail to realize everyone that Bear coached against also had unlimited scholarships and could manipulate the game. I've a feeling if Bear was coaching now he would be just as successful

Things are a lot more competitive today, so I’d give the edge to Saban.

Saban.

Even though they are both cheaters, it's much tougher to win now vs. when Bryant coached. Byrant bought all the players with no restrictions. At least Saban has a limit on how many he can buy.
