I don't think Jackson could pull it off now, that city has gone down pretty quickly. Which is a shame, I remember when that area in Jackson was really nice.
While the teams wouldn't go for it I could see Miss. schools or Arkansas playing a doubleheader in Memphis and getting a pretty darn good turnout at the Liberty Bowl. Ole Miss in particular is extremely popular in Memphis.

In 1968 LSU-Alabama played at noon at Legion Field in Birmingham followed by Tennessee-Auburn in the night cap. Aside from the immediate area 50 years later, that is one heck of a quartet of fan bases thrown together for one day.

Those were the days of the old Jackson Mall, and a lot different area around Mississippi Memorial.
That is putting it as kindly as possible

What years did they do this?
Posted on 5/29/19 at 10:14 am to Icoachfb
I am fairly certain they did it 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1975.State would sometimes play Alabama in Tuscaloosa multiple years in a row so it wasn't always the odd years.
State played Auburn at Legion Field in 1970 as a "home game" which followed the LSU-Alabama game.
Last double header LSU played in Jackson was in 1986. Tennessee-Ole Miss played in the old "JP Game" and LSU-Miss State followed at night.

Jackson State actually controls it now. In fact, the last doubleheader in Jackson was in 1989, and it was OM/Bama in the first one, followed by JSU and some other SWAC school. We fled after the OM/Bama game and headed to the state fair.

1975 LSU vs Ole Miss was a game I remember fondly. Freshman QB wearing number 18 (Tim Ellis) led the Rebels to a 17-13 victory in the closing minutes.

Ken Cooper's second year. Their record was 6-5,but that was really a good team. Finished the year strong beating Georgia (Cotton)and Vandy and Tenn who both had winning seasons.
Somehow he could beat the big boys (1976 Ala,Ga and 1977 ND) but sputtered vs teams he should have beaten.

Those were some legit good times when the double header was played and the fair was in town.
I once pulled off a double-header of another kind....started in Jackson at the OM / MSU game. OM won 24-3. Then drove to Baton Rouge for the LSU / Notre Dame game. LSU won 21-19. 1986. Two great games!

I lived in McComb when I was in high school. I remember flying up I-55 with a ton of LSU fans. Everyone was going 90+, and the MHP was just on the side of the road watching everyone pass. We always parked at Millsaps and hung out there between games.

That area is still fine. Its not as hopping as it used to be but its not unsafe. The City of Jackson couldn't manage the graveyard shift at Taco Bell which would make it a nightmare.
But you could buy a ticket to that doubleheader for $20 at your local Jitney Jungle. It was an awesome experience.

Memorial Stadium had some awesome games. State beat undefeated Bama in 1980, their first loss in like 26 games, and Ole Miss beat Notre Dame in 1977 who won the National Championship later that year,. Jackson was so different then.

Archie's first game in Mississippi as a varsity player was a double header. Night cap vs Kentucky after Auburn-Miss State in Sept 1968.
In 1970 Miss State upset Georgia in Jackson, and that night Alabama-Ole Miss played on ABC National TV at Mississippi Memorial.

Before unnecessary expansion.
The only school that brought eyes to the SEC has been A&M and the entire state of Texas market.

You would pay $5 to park in someones yard and then walk back to your car, NW of the stadium? Good luck, not me

What about a midweek baseball double header in pearl? Not a terrible idea. Trust mark park is a nice stadium and pearl is 10x better than jackson. And bass pro across the street. Someone get on the phone with the schools lets get this done

They had a doubleheader in 1990 as well. My dad and I went to the game when we played LSU in 1990 in the afternoon and JSU played Alcorn later that evening. That was the last year State played football games in Jackson.

You'd have to start at noon in order to be finished at a decent hour on a school night.
No way you're getting 2 college baseball games in 1 night.
I do love going to those Pearl games though

Basketball tourney in the coliseum? That could be done with a sponsor. I know state plays there once a year and so does southern.

I think the last double header at Legion Field was in '73 when Auburn & Oregon State played in the afternoon followed by Bama & Cal at night.
