Georgia beating Notre Dame in the 1981 Sugar Bowl was a big deal for the SEC

Before this, northern sportswriters had little respect for the SEC.
Notre Dame was like 3-0 against Alabama; they were like 20-0-1 against Georgia Tech.
Notre Dane was a really big deal.
I remember when my father was a staff physician for the student body at UGA in 1976. I got to ride with him when he was in charge at the stadium...you know...lots of dehydrated alcoholics, heart attacks amongst the older fans, etc..
The nurses who rode with us hated the Georgia Bulldogs because they had to work on a Saturday. 1 said she rooted for Tech, and the other was an Irish bitch from up north. She told me the Georgia Bulldogs and no southern team could ever beat Notre Dame.
Well, I wish I could've seen her face when Georgia beat Notre Dame in the 1981 Sugar Bowl. That was just the beginning of SEC kicking the shite out of smug northern teams.
BTW, we were from Ohio (fans of the Niles Red Dragons--state champions of 1961, 1963, and 1966 and couldn't believe the disloyalty of the local faculty.
Most modern day kids don't realize what a big deal it was for Georgia to beat Notre Dame then.

I was born in late December of '81, so I wasn't particularly concerned with the sugar bowl that year.

You know your football team sucks when you have to pull stats from 30+ years to prove a point.
