After the debacle that was Tennessee’s head coaching search, specifically the events around the potential hiring of Greg Schiano, Vol fans were clamoring for someone with Tennessee ties to come coach the Vols. Some fans wanted former head coach Phillip Fulmer to return and provide some stability for a season or two.
And apparently, Fulmer would’ve done just that if he had been asked. According to texts obtained in an open records request, Fulmer was asked if he would step in to coach the Vols and expressed interest in doing so. Texts messages from John “Thunder” Thornton, a Chattanooga businessman and prominent UT donor, to UT President Joe DiPietro were obtained. And on November 26th, the day of Schiano Sunday, Thornton said Fulmer would come back to coach Tennessee.
“Joe, yesterday morning I had a long talk with my good friend Bill Battle,” Thornton wrote. “Bill, Phillip and I hunt and fish a good bit together. We talked about Bama’s loss Saturday and our search. Bill asked me if Phillip would consider coaching UT. I told him I doubted it because I didn’t think he’d work for Currie. “This morning I asked Phillip that question and he replied ‘all they would have to do is ask’. So, there’s another option for you but probably not one Jim (Haslam) would go along with.”

So Phil was involved well before Leach’s deal was even on the table.

Are you trying to say Fulmer has something to do with Leach not getting hired. Lol
Absolutely and without question. It defies logic to believe Fulmer wasn’t involved in that.

That has nothing to do with this. You forgot that Currie wasn't even getting fired until he went rogue and tried to hire Leach. The board nixed that idea because they had not approved him beforehand. The board made that decision, not Fulmer. I'm not even a Fulmer fan but he had nothing to do with it. Outside of this board nobody else thinks that either.

You’re welcome to your own delusions.

“When I talked to him this morning he was feeling really bad for the university that he loves. He will do anything to help.”
Anything...except keep his fat arse away from the program.

How can Fulmer be involved when Currie trying to hire Leach is what got him fired in the first place? There wasn't even an AD job available until Currie went rogue. Do you seriously not remember or are you just trolling?

Currie trying to hire Leach isn’t what got him fired. A fan base that seriously thought Gruden was coming to Tennessee got Currie fired. A fan base that thinks Fulmer is the answer got Currie fired. A fan base that is ready to fire the coach Fulmer hired in game 2 of year two got Currie fired. A fan base completely disconnected from reality got Currie fired.
And then he got paid $2.5 million for “going rogue.”
And then he got paid $2.5 million for “going rogue.”

All of that could be argued but that has nothing to do with what we are talking about. The final straw was him going rogue. Fulmer couldn't have nixed the Leach hire because he wasn't involved yet. Hell, like you showed, he was still trying to be the coach when that happened. Look, if you don't believe me check the Tennessee message boards. There are plenty of Fulmer haters there and if your conspiracy theory was possible somebody there would definitely be arguing that. But no one is because it was impossible.

CML had accepted the job offered by your x ad. If you are a vol fan you surely know that.

Rich, you’re the only person I’ve ever heard who doesn’t take it as fact. Honestly, EVERYONE, takes it as a given.

Wrong. Go look at the Vol boards. No one believes that. Hell, go back on this board when it happened. No one believed it then too.

That's true, but our AD didn't get it approved by the board which is what got him fired. Fulmer wasn't involved yet.

He tried to kill Bama but Tennessee died instead.
Poetic.

Wrong.
What got him fired was Currie going off the grid for six hours and the subsequent confusion over whether or not Doeren had been offered the job. It wasn't merely whether or not the Leach offer had been approved. It was Currie going incommunicado from his boss for six hours at the most sensitive time, when Davenport thought perhaps there was another offer that was still on the table.
"“I trust you are on your way back to Knoxville as I requested in my text message this afternoon,” Davenport wrote to Currie Thursday night. “This morning, we tried for six hours to contact you about the state of the search. After finally connecting, you informed me that you were in California heading into a meeting with Mike Leach. This was the first I had heard of this meeting. Because of the confusion from earlier in the day with the other candidate (Doeren), I asked you not to pursue any discussions about employment with any additional candidates.”
All of this was after this exchange with Doeren's agent:
"Later that night at around 9 PM, Currie contacted Jordan Bazant, the agent representing N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren, and said “Gundy is (out).” Bazant, who had been in contact with Currie previously, responded, “Lets get this done.”
Currie would fly out to Raleigh, NC that Tuesday night and ended up meeting with Doeren on Wednesday. Strangely enough, it was shortly before this happened that information began to drop that Currie was in talks with Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm about becoming the head coach. But there aren’t any discussions between Currie and Brohm or his agent in any of the released documents.
After Currie met with Doeren on Wednesday, he apparently didn’t think the meeting went well. He would express in communications afterwards that he felt he needed a backup plan in case Doeren didn’t accept his proposal, and that thought process led to what ultimately did him in as Tennessee’s AD.
At 3:52 AM Thursday morning, November 30th, Currie sent out a text to Washington State head coach Mike Leach. “Coach – Currie here. You available for a call?”
Leach responded immediately and called Currie shortly after.
Later that morning, Bazant, Doeren’s agent, messaged Currie and said that Doeren “is fired up.” After Currie didn’t respond to him, Bazant messaged later on, “really need to hear from you.”
The two never messaged again."

Uh, I know. I have said over and over in this thread he got fired for going rogue. That was my point. Not getting approved was part of the going rogue.
