It is. I have some personal experience in that department (family member). Brain tumors are a real nightmare.

exactly

4 weeks from time of initial symptoms which where consistent with and diagnosed as vertigo. Im sure initially was thought to be dehydration too. but 4 weeks from initial symptoms until the surgery....that is extremely accelerated diagnosis and surgery.

look i feel bad for him, but doctors are not gods. its not normal for them to order an mri on the brain immediately.

i do feel bad, he will have to be taken care of the rest of his life prolly but man frick him and his family for turning this into a money grab.

Sounds like to me he shouldn't have even been given a choice in this matter. Most of these kids come from nothing and this is their only shot. LSU coaching staff pressured this kid onto the field despite his health. Of course if given an option he's going to want to fight for his spot.

You seem emotional, players are always in danger of losing a starting spot due to injury/unavailability.

It sucks but it's the realities of athletics.

He will likely be disabled for the rest of his life and is throwing everything against the wall to see what he can get.

It's a bad situation but I don't really blame him. It isn't like LSU is going to take care of him for life.

I don't know what your experience has been but when I went to my ENT to complain about vertigo symptoms, after a routine in-office checkup, he ordered an MRI, specifically to ensure I didn't have a brain tumor. Based on the timeline in the Yahoo Sports article (which may not be accurate), Brooks was experiencing symptoms (which progressively got worse) for longer than a month before an MRI was ordered? That's just insanely dumb based on how easily college sports teams can access MRI machines.

quote:

However, on Aug. 5, during the first week of LSU’s preseason camp, Brooks experienced symptoms of nausea and dizziness and vomited at practice. He was treated with Zofran for the nausea and was cleared to return to practice. Two days later, on Aug. 7, Brooks’ symptoms increased. LSU trainers cleared Brooks of a concussion after using an electronic app on an iPad called “C3 Logix,” the complaint says. On Aug. 11, Brooks experienced more symptoms during a “rolling drill” while at practice. He was treated for “vertigo.”

Symptoms persisted over the next several weeks as the Tigers prepared for the season opener against Florida State in Orlando. Brooks was given the option to not participate in practice but was “simultaneously told by the coaching staff that if he chose to sit out, someone else would take his place, such that he may lose his starting position,” the lawsuit says.

Would it have made a difference if he had the MRI earlier? Who knows, but I can't agree that waiting over a month to do the MRI makes sense.

Shame the kid can’t walk/dance.

As such, Grinding Brian will have to offer up a personal lap dance as part of the settlement.

in 99% of the cases...it takes over a month after seeing a GP to be referred to a neuro and to get an mri was my point.

and it was start of camp and like 2nd week of the season when he has the diagnoses so maybe it was 5 weeks. still that is an accelerated timeline

especially when at first it was thought to be from dehydration or vertigo.

im not a doctor but i do know that referrals to most specialist take a while and this would not have changed anything

in the lawsuit he kind of acknowledges that when he says it would have just gave him more time to choose a different doctor...

Totally agree. My only point was that this isn't true for collegiate athletes. They typically get MRIs a day or two after an injury.

Sadly, Brian Kelly, his staff, and LSU put winning football games ahead of this young man's health and well-being. The money won't bring back his ability to walk but it should help.

Recruits should take this as a warning and learn from this.

Yes, but he didn't suffer an injury.

He was having symptoms consistent with heat related issues that are common during the time period in which he was suffering them.

Perhaps it can be painted as negligence but I doubt any of the team doctors were even considering the possibility that he had a brain tumor.

Still, 40 days from first symptoms to surgery is fairly good.

Did you read the article? If someone is suffering from symptoms that include vertigo, they rule out a concussion, and they don't seem to get better after being treated for "heat related issues," it's reasonable to expect the trainers to not wait over a month to order an MRI to rule out a brain tumor.

I just hope that he can regain enough motor skills to be functional. My coworker had symptoms for a few weeks, went to the doctor, got an MRI a couple of days later, then brain surgery a few days after that. He had a stroke during surgery and he lost use of the entire left side of his body. Never really recovered, and they couldn't eradicate the cancer fully. Died less than a year later. It was absolutely horrible to witness. Great guy. Felt so fricking bad for him and his family. R.I.P. Trip.
