Well you can look at the article from Sports Illustrated or the Orlando Sentinel or a myriad of others. I think it is very curious why FSU would give up direct state funds at a time when they are hurting financially.

You don't merge the two just to avoid sunshine laws. The boosters controlling funds has been an issue, and was gonna hamper getting a good athletic director. Coburn is only gonna be on the job for maybe 2 years.

Georgia and Florida have already done this..... Look for other states to allow it in the future.

I forgot about the UAA. I doubt the sole purpose of forming it was to avoid sunshine laws

I’d guess not too as I’m pretty sure the UAA predated sunshine laws. It started in 1929.

Well, they did want Bowden as their Coach. Tried in 1979 and FSU won the game in Baton Rouge, he stayed put and the rest is history.

This is the result of a four team playoff selected by a committee. We are now a society that if you do not have a chance to win the ultimate goal, people prefer to stay home and watch games on TV. Compare that with the NFL, were teams with a few loses still have a chance to win the Super Bowl. This is a trend that will not go away.

What goes along with getting direct state funds? Are there certain rules about red tape that could be causing issues?

Winning or not, schools should focus on enhancing the fan experience over adding seats. I'll take watching with friends at the house over a stadium anyday

I always thought that was the major point of turning down state money and it always aggravated me that we were doing it. I don't know why you would want to be private otherwise. Maybe someone who understands it better than I can explain it.

I always thought more money = bigger and better facilities = better recruiting = more wins and the circle continues.

The older I get, the more I feel this way too.

The average age of fans attending games is going up. Even Bama has a hard time getting students to the games.

The first half of your statement is true. Older fans have the time and money to go to more games.
The Bama student attendance problem is that Alabama recruits students nationally rather than locally so there is no home-grown allegiance to the school like most schools.

Eh you can have the best food and the best seats but if the team sucks no one will come.

The place to spend the money is on facilities right now. Not only do they improve recruiting which improves the product which improves attendance, but when the musical chairs stop with TV rights money the programs that loaded up on facilities paid for with ESPN cash and low interest rates in general will have permanent advantages over the programs that held off upgrades and then get fricked when they ESPN money hose goes away.

When amateurism dies and all that money that was paid to coaches gets paid to players instead, suddenly recruits will be picking programs based on what they offer rather than the fit of personality with the person in charge.

This doesn't make sense, at all. Aggy "loaded up" on nearly half a billion dollars in long-term debt that was precisely predicated on this "ESPN money" continuing for at least 30 years.

To deny that is to deny the old aggy adage that you "saved the SEC" by adding TV sets for your conference network.

That will be the Ags in a few years with Jimbo, except they paid a lot more for him than FSU.
And FSU got a NC thanks to the crableg theif.

By the time the SEC-ESPN contract is up we will have paid over 20 years of that note, so for us its ok. But other conferences like the Big 10, or PAC, or Big 12 that will renegotiate their contracts in the middle of next decade might be screwed. The SEC deal is through 2034 which is a whole decade more than most other conferences.

We saved the SEC from a shitty 2009 contract that prevented the start of a SEC Network. As it was the SEC was set to be paid worse than the Big 12 for two decades with no hope of a real network. Expansion via A&M triggered a clause in that contract that allowed for the SEC Network to happen an each SEC program gets and extra $20 million a year thanks to that expansion.
