On the flip side - Rod and Sonny call a great basketball game.
Rod still fusses about the refs an awful lot. I was listening to their game against Indiana State last week. Just about every other trip, Rod would biatch about a call and Sonny would reply "Yeah, that wasn't really a foul but you have to know to adjust to the way they call the game".
It sounded like he really wanted to scream "Rod STFU ABOUT THE REFS ALREADY!"

Honestly its amazing with the passion for football both fan bases have that they have such bad play by play and color analyst. Rod is probably a good guy but he's such a fan he announces like he's in Sec 6 row 7. Stan White cannot give the other team credit for anything. Eli Gold won't give time or the score to save his life, which really is the main thing a play by play is supposed to do. Phil Savage is just terrible his meltdowns in the 2015 Ole Miss game and 2013 Auburn games were embarrassing. Clown whines about refs the whole game.
4 really,really bad announcers.

The thing about their football calls is the implication that the refs are purposely trying to screw Auburn. It'd be one thing to do that against Alabama. Obviously I think that's a joke, but at least there is a conspiracy theory there.
They act like that in games against Texas A&M or Missouri. It doesn't even make sense.

Rod is a better play-by-play guy than Eli.
My wife would be a better color commentator than Stan White. He almost makes me feel embarrassed for Auburn. Almost.

In the words of Stan White, "Wow!"
Jim Fyffe was absolutely the best in the business and dearly missed. Rod is nothing more than average and whines about officiating way too much. He does a good job of setting plays up and explaining the action. Stan is a complete joke.
Eli Gold is a Yankee NASCAR announcer trying to call a football game. It's brutal.

The days of Fyffe, Munson, Ward and Cristil were as good as it got. Those days will never return.
The Georgia guys are really bad too.

Nobody cares anymore.
All SEC games are televised and most everyone has access to a device where they can stream the telecast if they're away from a TV. The only people listening on radio are those that are driving or working some job where they can't watch. Demand is low, so nobody will shell out bucks for actual talent.
The result is you end up with former players who are just looking for a side gig (or were too bad to get ESPN/CBS/Fox work) and play by play guys with some tie to the program.

Agree. And don't forget Cawood Ledford at Kentucky.
Honestly he wasn't the "best" announcer, but I always enjoyed John Forney. He had a style that was very decent and professional. This was in the 70's when Alabama was a blitzkrieg like now and he never would jab the opponent or belittle them. Now,Doug Layton would.

Jerry Duncan had the best ever before a Tennessee game.
"Well Eli, Smokey just came out of the tunnel, and he's about 100 yards away from me now, and if I had my deer rifle I believe I could drop him, back to you Eli"
He'd get fired for that today.....

Yea - stuff like that is what made that older generation of radio guys.
They were homers, but they called a spade a spade. Munson unapologetically loved the Dawgs, but when they were playing like arse he told listeners they were playing like arse. He didn't cover for them and make excuses.

I love Rod on football calls, can't stand him on basketball. But I really wish we would dump Stan White. Dude uses the same few phrases & whines a ton. Drives me crazy
Rod nails the big moment tho. I can put up with some of his failures knowing that when the big moment happens he's gonna nail the call

Eli Gold is the best. frick what yall talkin about
The Auburn duo sound like petulant children calling a game - totally unprofessional, and completely biased.
At least Eli isn't biased. He obviously wants Alabama to win, but he doesn't start making excuses or whining on air. He's made some all-time classic calls.
I remember a lot of people hated Verne Lundquist too, but sec on cbs isn't as good without him

That was one reason Cawood Ledford at UK was so popular. He said one time early in his career Adolph Rupp sat next to him on the bus from the opposing arena to the gym. Rupp asked him what he thought of the game. Ledford said UK looked sloppy and not ready. Rupp told him he hoped that's what Ledford said during the broadcast. He hadn't ,would do so in the future.

Auburn is pathetic and deserves to have their arse roundly beaten this weekend.
And kudos on the thread title.

Stan doesn't call the game. Eli for that matter doesn't call much of a game. Never know the score or down and distance. Eli also has a horrible tendency to let an entire play happen with deaf air and then just recap the play. Phil Savage is just horrible and his homerism should call into question his biases in regards to the senior bowl.
