Eh he will probably ok. He was absolutely terrible at UF, but I think Pete is still planning on calling the defense which was Toney's big weakness. They are both off the Ron Roberts tree and coached together at UTSA.

He will be fine. He will be Pete’s version of CWJ. Lane hiring CWJ made no sense at the time because his offenses at USF ranked in the 100s both years he was there. Kiffin molded him and it obviously has helped him drastically improve.

Yeah, I was just about to post that this is the first head scratcher for me for Golding.

He was only there one year as a co-DC & safeties coach wasn't he? And then after that "absolutely terrible year," he was hired as the Arizona Cardinals defensive backs coach, which he held for the last three years. Doesn't seem like a bad pick when your HC is really also your DC and this guy will be his protégé. The CWJ comparison is probably apt.

No, he was the DC and called the defense. I think one of Spence or Bateman had a co-DC title as well, but Toney was the real DC. We were about 90th in total defense that year so...not good.

Coached and recruited in the secondary in the state of Louisiana

Coached and recruited in the secondary in the state of Florida

Coached 3 years in the secondary at the NFL level

Exactly the kind of coach I'd want us to hire

Pete is still going to call the defense next year according his early pressers after Lane left - Toney will likely be his eye in the sky for adjustments.

OM defense likely stacked next year - they retained all of their good players and are doing well on D in the portal.

If that's what we want to call it.

He'll probably be fine as long as he is not actually in charge of the defense. Assume he won't be with Golding there.

He coached the Cards' secondary for 3 years in the NFL. You can't fake your way through that league for 3 consecutive years. If you use any assistants' time under Bayou Billy in The Swamp as a measuring stick their numbers are going to be universally bad. End of the day he was intelligent enough to high tail it out of Gainesville after one season. He wasn't fired.

Didn't he inherit a pretty suspect defense from a talent standpoint at UF?

Oh, to be in the top 90 in defense. Forgot what that was like.
