But how do you untangle the mineral owner caught in the middle?

They had little choice but to execute leases, or else be stuck as a participant with their proportional share of WI expenses, with the chance of never seeing any revenue until the well pays out. If it ever pays out.

I agree that judgement is bad, but the mineral owner should not be punished in the response.
