A few real college towns I enjoyed around the country that you don't often see mentioned:

New Palz, NY (SUNY)

Davis, CA (UC - Davis)
California actually has a lot of cool college towns like San Luis Obispo, Arcata, Santa Cruz etc)

Bloomington, IN

Bigger than traditional "college town" but mainly because there's around 100K college students:
Tempe, Ariz (Ariz St. etc)

Athens, Ga is still the quintessential college town.

I'll say that the weirdest college town I've ever visited is Lubbock. It's in the middle of nowhere.

When did you go? I use to hate it but recently I’ve come around. They’ve dumped a lot in that town and college to build it up. Cool bar scene

Lubbock has a weird feel to it and I like it. I feel like I’m in no country for old men. It also has a great airport that I can pull up to 30 minutes before my flight and walk right on.

Never been to Lubbock but can see that.

I toured a lot of western college towns when I was in my 20s in a band and loved going to Las Cruces NM (New Mexico State). Tons of college students seemingly in the middle of nowhere in a cool looking desert.

Knoxville isn’t that large.

It isn't exactly a small, quaint college town.

If you ranked SEC campuses by "urban feel"....UT would be towards the top.

Behind Vandy and Texas and maybe tied with CoSC.

State College is a really great town. It's in the absolute middle of nowhere, but very nice place

As die hard as a Tennessee fan I am, I have to say the campus and Knoxville in general is one of the worst I’ve been to. Its literally a construction site non stop

Auburn and Athens are both very nice--pity about the schools, though.

Tuscaloosa was a great college town when I attended Bama, but they've corporatized/sanitized the place so much that most of the charm is gone.

Austin has great $65 barbecue plates with the sides coming in little plastic condiment cups. You'll also be surrounded in the restaurant by self-congratulatory hipsters, and it's always a privelege to be in the presence of people who are saving the world and making the world a better place to live.

Boulder Colorado
Last time I went to Boulder for a game, my cousin and I head over to Pearl Street post-game looking for a place to eat. We see some smoking hot blonde hanging out, and my cousin asks her for a recommendation. She starts talking about some place with all organic food and an extensive vegan menu, yammering on for several minutes, then I said, "Frankly, we were thinking more like a steak." She just looked at us like we were crazy.

The campus isn't much of a beauty spot, but for an out of towner, it's a fun road trip if done right. You can stay downtown, or on the edge of downtown, and walk to restaurants/bars, then walk to the game. There are a lot of college towns where you can't do that (College Station being one of them).
