when he was a kid, the klan burned a cross in his families yard because of something political. His parents decided to let him sleep and not show him the burning cross from what I understand.

interesting, I didn't know this.
The Confederate Grays were always considered to be one of the best dressed regiments in the army. Going into every battle they would always clean up to look their best.
That's why the fraternities and a lot of fans dress up. To look their best when we're going into battle like the Confederate Grays did.

How did the segregated SEC fare against other integrated teams back then?

I know that Bear Bryant wanted integration at Alabama after getting his but kicked by an integrated USC team.
Iowa won the Rose Bowl in 1956 and 58 including winning the Grantland Rice National Championship in 58. Almost their whole team was black. They probably had more black players then than they do now.

on top of that our first president was william t. sherman and we had been integrated comparatively peacefully several years before
wait what?
LSU's first president was William T. Sherman....that's why the ROTC building is unnamed...
and LSU had been integrated back in the 50's

But people were just as rude and hateful from what I understand.

Was the Phi Mu ASB President being called a racial slur by a student a necessary detail?
It seemed so vague and forced into the film... just seemed unnecessary, IMO.

Maybe because he was walking by with a camera crew?

One of the most misunderstood stories about Bryant. The team was already integrated. Wilbur Jakson was a freshman in 1970. However, he was ineligible under NCAA rules on freshmen at the time. There were also multiple "test cases" of African-American walk-ons as early as 1966.
When Alabama played USC in the Los Angeles the next year (1971), an African-American JuCo transfer in John Mitchell was a big part of the win.

This is what Ole Miss should highlight. Wright Thompson told the story of the Confederate Grays on Finebaum earlier and it was the first time I ever heard an explication for the Rebel mascot.
I think people would be more understanding of a noble ideal than the whole, "South Will Rise Again" message. War Eagle originated in the Civil War so it can be done.
SN: If you haven't seen Ken Burn's 2012, "Death and the Civil War", it's worth a watch if you're a history buff

I think it was there to show that race relations are better at Ole Miss. I mean she is the first black SGA president & she's the only black member of her sorority. In some cases, that's a big step for an SEC school.
Am I the only one who wishes Thompson would have contacted his family member or what he thought was his family member?

No. It kind of pissed me off they threw that in there. It wasn't needed at all.

That was one of the few issues I had with the piece.
