Leach had it right.
2 kinds of players:
1. NIL star: they are on their own. Make what you can, but no scholarship, etc. Leave whenever you want to after 1 year.
2. Scholarship players: school committed to paying for 3 years, player committed for 3 years. Tuition, fees, training table, etc for theses guys. Attend class, progress academically, do not be a criminal and you’re good for 3 years. You can leave after 3 years to pros or IF you have a degree- another school.

Courts already ruled this is not allowed.
The courts didn't rule on transfers at all. It ruled on benefits and was extrapolated to all NIL to avoid a certain loss.
But there's nothing stopping the NCAA from bringing back the transfer year except the expectation they'd get sued for that too.

Do you want the coaches to have to sit a year if they change schools too?

Taking shots at Gumps aside, many are missing the key point.
Unlimited NIL free agency (which not even the NFL has!) is helping to destroy college football.
College football no longer exists.
It's poorly-run minor league pro football now.
And many fans will lose interest because it's just minor league pro football.
Laugh at Gumps all you want.
Ignore "college football" laying on the floor bleeding out from a broken beer bottle slash across the throat.

I'm pretty sure the NFL has unlimited NIL money. I don't think Tom Brady had a limit on endorsements.

Why are so many bama fans now looking for "fixes" when they didn't have a peep to say about the current state of college football until last week?
Buncha frickin' hypocrites.

This is the mostly typical Gump thread I've ever seen
So arrogant.
So out of touch.
So LACKING in self awareness.
oh no things aren't going my WAY we have to change EVERYTHING so that things DO go my way.
You enjoyed the one sided balance of power the transfer portal opened up to you as kids sat 3 years riding the pine with a constellation of 5 stars just waiting to be coached by Saban. Now he is gone and literally NOBODY wants to play for your PNW import in that awful city of yours.
Oops.
You see. An adult who doesn't have the mindset of a spoiled brat child would understand "hey, that's life." It comes and goes. Ups and down. Ebb and flow.
But not you.
Eat shite gumps.
Go teabag another passed out fan.
The most insufferable fanbase ever conceived.

There is too much money in CFB for it to totally go away. First it was CTE that threatened football at all levels since less parents were allowing their kids to play football, and not just pee wee/Pop Warner. Enter NIL (and some states allowing HS players to benefit) and suddenly participation is trending back up again. Of course some say NIL itself will kill CFB, but the only thing it does (along with infinite transfers) is take away the facade of CFB being an amateur sport where the only payment is tuition/room & board.
Other than maybe some minor rule change details, the game of CFB has already changed about as much as it's going to. Right now NIL is in the wild West phase, but once individual businesses and collectives realize they aren't getting enough ROI (in some cases zero) then things will settle a bit and players will have no choice but to be more realistic in their expectations. The reality is even on a high profile team there will only be 4-5 players with the star power to be true influencers for goods and services and thereby reap the financial benefits. The rest of the team will have to be happy receiving anywhere from $20-60k per year from collectives that target specific position groups.
But like I said at the beginning, there is too much money involved for the game of CFB to go away. All the recent changes simply means the haves get richer and have nots struggle a bit more than usual, but they won't go away. In recent years far more small colleges where basketball was their money sport have started (in some cases restarted) football programs than folded, and that's because even a little money coming in is better than nothing at all..

Go back to making them sit out a year if they choose to transfer. It would cut down on this “unrestricted free agency” that is happening. This is not sustainable. At least in the NFL they have multi year contracts…
Not all players transfer for more money. It’s important to players to get the opportunity to play their way to the next level and most leave for situations that help them get there. Drew Sanders didn’t come to Arkansas for money and that was a huge decision for him and got him in to pro ball in a better draft position than sitting the bench at Bama.
Why punish these players for chasing a dream.
Those who are chasing a buck in college can kis my arse. Pay them for contributions not potential.

quote:There are still tons of CFB fans (especially SEC) who truly don't understand the difference between NIL and the old school bag game. I mean sure some programs are blurring the lines between the two a bit (it's still technically against NCAA rules to entice high school recruits with NIL deals, it's supposed to be for registered students only) but the bag game is simple "pay to play at my school", or the really dirty "pay for a publicized visit to our school and extra pay for not visiting X school." NIL is a totally different animal, it's making deals with businesses and corporations (collectives in some cases) to use the players star power to endorse the goods and services provided by said businesses and corporations. Not every player is going to get a multi-million dollar deal to be in Coke or Dr Pepper tv ads, that has to be earned by on the field performance. If "Ed's used import car emporium" wants to pay their favorite players a few $ to be in local TV ads or maybe drive around in one of their cars and tell people where it came from, why not? Any other student at the same university is free to get a job in town, use insta/YT/Tik Tok to make extra cash, why should football players be any different? I'm sure that was the main point the SCOTUS used in their NIL ruling.

It’s not sustainable for bamas
Decades of cheating
Saban quit
because he lost the advantage he had
IT’S UNFAIR
