Not really. It's a common theme for preachers and thumpers to say things are getting worse and worse, and we're moving further and further away from religion. It's not actually true.

Did you know that there were a higher percentage of atheists/agnostics/deists in 1830s in America than there are now? Then there was a great revival in the mid-1800s. True story.

Religion in football

All you need to know is that when one coach thanks God for a win, the other coach never thanks God for the loss.

But if God really has his hand in football games, you can't have one without the other.

Yep. Church attendance is down, thus offerings are down, thus the fear mongering from preachers.

I would prefer my coach not to be a superstitious moron.

I think you have to be honest about who you are--religious, or otherwise.

Weird because it's typically the religious right who is the most skeptical of the government, yet they also want the government to officially get into the religion business?

Well, only if if said government subscribes to their particular brand of religion.

Sorry, I'm on the rant in a meeting and I got caught

What I'm basically saying is that TRUE Christianity has a place in all facets of life, especially football.

Reason being that TRUE Christianity is based on service. Serving others. I agree that too many churches have completely gone away from this, and they ask for money way too much.

Too many aspects of our society have gone towards the promoting the "individual" and "selfishness." Serving others is something we should all do regardless of religion. A coach is serving others by helping young men grow up prepared to handle what the world throws at them. Football is a great metaphor for life itself and religion can do nothing but help in my opinion. It's just a game. What really matters is how we serve others on Earth and where we spend eternity.

Church membership back then was lower than it is today, but part of that is because it was a lot harder to become a member of a (Protestant) church back then. They had conduct reviews and morality hearings, etc, and in the rural areas, church meetings weren't held that often, either.

Deism and "rational Christianity" were the prevailing idea of the day

Doubt they would want you calling them religious. Christians are about a relationship with Christ, not being religious.

Truth. Jesus despised the pharisees most because they were more concerned with being "religious" than actually being compassionate and righteous.

Jesus also said you should give away all your possessions and live in poverty. Have you done that?
