I think its obvious no one is happy with the state of college football, but how do we fix it? The old way is dead and gone. Paying players won't go away, and the transfer portal is a huge factor but courts getting involved and the sport being chaos on all points has taken a toll on the sport. What's the path forward? Is there even a solution?

Prospects pick a conference, then we have a draft.

Make sports gambling illegal again.
Give players one transfer without having to sit a year.
Just those two things would make college football so much more enjoyable.

Whatever the sanctioning body for the sport becomes, it will have to receive antitrust exemption from Congress to avoid all the legal issues.
Congress, of course, has made regulation of the sport a literal political football. So doubtful they “fix” anything.
Wish in one hand, shite in the other. See which one fills up first. Just my $.02

Ole Miss will go back to sucking if we go back to the old way of doing shite
Schools like OM benefit from the transfer portal and playing players. A guy like Trinidad never would've had a chance in the old system.
The closest thing OM had to this before NIL and transfer portal was occasionally getting community college misfits that were talented. The community college SEC farm system collapsed when the transfer portal became a thing

NIL salary cap. Although I think CTE issues will take the sport down the most. Too many brain injuries that are being ignored right now but are going to reappear soon. Our brains were not made to take these hits.

it's certainly not by fining a University a half million for storming the field.
I get the SEC is a ball-less entity, devoid of a backbone, and trying to remain relevant; however going over the top for a spontaneous expression of joy will not makeup for the NCAA bending over backward to the NIL, or players returning from the draft, or having no salary cap, or paying more than the NFL would to impenitent children, and on and on....
That said I'd start by limiting the number of institutions a student can have, by enforcing a year delay for jumping ship, and putting an age limit in place for these perpetual students.

-Bring back sitting out one year after a transfer. That has to happen.
-Keep the courts out of NCAA regulations. Can't have local judges overriding NCAA rules and deciding how college sports should be run. Participating in NCAA activities as a "student-athlete" is 100% voluntary. Nobody's civil liberties are being violated by any NCAA regulation. By accepting a place on a team (scholarship or walk-on) you agree to abide by NCAA rules.
-Salary caps are needed, but eventually it will just lead to the old bag-man situation where players will get paid under the table.
-Contracts. If players want to get paid like professionals, they should be treated like professionals. NFL,NBA, and MLB players sign contracts. It can be one year, two years, three years....whatever. Players should not be able to just leave whenever they want. Can you imagine the NFL if players could just go to another team at any time?
If the situation is left as it, college football will be unwatchable in about 4-5 years.

NIL salary cap.
It still blows my mind that we’re this far and NIL and people have no idea what it is. You cannot cap how much money someone is able to make off of their name image and likeness.
What you’re asking for is either the NCAA have legal jurisdiction over how privately-owned businesses spend their money or for the federal government to create limitations on how much money people can make, which is basically one step away from full-blown communism

It's not a civil matter. It's a business decision which is covered by a membership agreement. Yes, players should be free to garner whatever they can but that is just another entry in their tax return. Which is above and beyond what the organization has set as a limit for their schools to pay. And could be set to zero and still not violate anyone's constitutional protections. They don't have to play football, golf, or badminton, they made a conscious decision to go to college. And the courts have overstepped into killing amateur sports by not correctly defining NIL as something apart from the college experience.
The courts forgot it's a extracurricular part of college and not a right that's being subverted.

None of these player’s name image and likeness is worth 1/10th of what they are getting. It’s pay to play.

That’s a whole lot of words when you could just say that I’m right and you don’t know what NIL is

That’s up to the private entities deciding how much someone’s name image or likeness is worth

Sitting out after transferring would fix so much.

just change the playoff format from 12 down to 10 teams. preserve the high stakes feel of regular season games and the sport will survive.

Well, I totally agree with you… That isn’t going to happen. There’s too much money involved in playoff bowl games.
The name of the game for college football is money. Everyone is greedy and trying to get everything they can. From the coaches, players, conferences, television, etc. more playoff games brings more money. That bowl game has now become meaningful and will sell a hell of a lot more advertisements.

And the NIL mess we're dealing with now will still exist even if/when the universities are allowed to directly pay players. The people paying NIL money now will still give money on top of what the universities are paying so we're going to be no different off, players will just be making even more money.
With the way college football recruiting works, there isnt really a way around NIL at this point.
