I happened to be driving to a football game yesterday and heard that exchange.

I was impressed to hear his football history knowledge. I mean he was naming players on the teams as you or I would talk about people from last week.

The VT lone TD was with final minutes ticking off the clock and AU team already in celebration mode.

You can go look. Auburn appeared tied with OU for the #2 spot for one weekand then dropped back to #3 the next week.

USC and OU were #1 and #2 every week of the year.

ETA: Auburn had the toughest schedule in the nation, too, in 1983.

Auburn had a good case, but if it came down to them and us, we should have won it.

IIIRC, we ended with the same record and had the head to head tie-breaker. We curb stomped them in Auburn. It would have been a shutout, but Bo scored a late garbage time TD after the game was out of reach.

Agree. Auburn should have won in 2004. That’s the best team I’ve ever seen them have.

You lost your bowl game. You had two losses. >insert buzzer sound<

There was two minutes left in the game, but it was an ugly game all around. Auburn could not score in the red zone and had to settle for 3 field goals. Va Tech left points 10 points on the table that would have given the win.

None of it was enough to overcome the consensus #1 team from every weekly poll throughout the season crushing the #2 team in its bowl game.

Texas had 1 loss to Georgia
Auburn had 1 loss to Texas

IMO he is saying..
the argument wasn’t that Texas should have been NC.. but rather why Auburn couldn’t be NC.. because they lost to a one loss Texas.. therefore, someone else had to be NC.

11-1 Miami (lost to two loss Florida)
(but beat #1 Nebraska)

12-1 Nebraska (lost to one loss Miami)

These three kinda cancel each other out
11-1 Texas (lost to one loss Georgia)
10-1-1 Georgia (lost to one loss Auburn)
11-1 Auburn (lost to one loss Texas)

9-2-1 Florida (lost to Georgia and Auburn)

Bottom line: Nebraska should have kicked the extra point, and Texas shouldn’t have muffled the punt, and Auburn shouldn’t have gotten their arse kicked by Texas.. etc

Miami was really the only option at that point.

Just my opinion

Don’t know where you’re getting that from?

We had one loss to #7 Georgia by one point.
We played 4 top 10 teams & were 3-1 in those games.
And, we whipped your arse in your stadium. It was 20-0 and fans were filing out by the droves at halftime.

All I’m saying is that we open up the “what if” jar, head to head should be the difference. BTW, I do think y’all should have won 2004.

Not just your opinion. That’s what launched the Canes to center stage.

The real question is why in the world Jimbo brought it up?

The radio show conversation was on old records and it somehow got to Dan Fouts and then Lionel James and the radio host was trying to remember Lionel James's college career and Jimbo went all Encyclopedia on him.

Gotcha. L-Train was a legit back who was overshadowed by the rest of that Auburn backfield. It was deep.

Yeah, Jimbo was noting how James set an NFL all purpose yardage record that lasted nearly 20 years.

I did not realize he passed away at a young age. Sad. . . he was a talent.

If he had played for a McDaniels or Shanahan, he’d have been a star. I was sad to hear of his death.

Jimbo grew up around SEC football. Auburn in particular.

Then, that team vacated for cheating, leaving Auburn Number 1.

We played Terry Bowden last week. So last week coaches show had a lot of old Auburn memories Jimbo brought up (asked about). And Terry did an interview with 247, told a lot of old stories. But yes, obviously Jimbo has old Auburn history and he remembers it so vividly. It’s cool.
