December 9, 2006 - Rich Rodriguez tells The University of Alabama "No"

AKA...the lowest point I ever reached as an Alabama football fan. I felt like we had hit rock bottom and that we'd end up hiring some B-lister no better than Shula. Sure...it turned out better for us in the end, but in the moment it was probably the darkest day in my fandom. easily.

Rich Rodriguez could immortalized as a Jeopardy answer.
“This coach turned down Alabama in December of 2006, leading them to hire Nick Sabin and have the most dominating run in CFB history.”
“Who is Mike Price?”
Ooh, sorry.
“Not as sorry as Mike Price was…”

I can't think of any other big jobs that were open at the time so Saban probably stays in the NFL for at least another year.

Good thing Saban knew there was no salary cap in Tuscaloosa….

Had Rich Rod said yes, Saban likely would have stayed with Miami another year, then signed as HC of Michigan in 08. And college football would look radically different.

Yeah, I was posting on the old ESPN message boards and it was brutal. The Auburn folks were giddy as hell, claiming that Bama would be irrelevant for 50 years.
Thank god that Mal was a stubborn old man.

Oh yeah! Those were good days to be an Auburn fan

Odds are it would have been another Franchione scenario. Doesn’t really accomplish much at Bama but pads his resume, but leaps for Florida State, USC, etc, when they became available in 2010.

Rich Rod didn’t tell JSU no though. Jacksonville >>> shithole Tuscaloosa

People under 20 forget that Alabama football was once really in serious trouble during the Franchione-Shula years. In hindsight it looks like a blip between coach Stallings and CNS. Sorta reminds me of how young OSU fans forget how big it was for Tressel to start beating Michigan.
As the documentary “Turning the Tide” said, Saban came to Bama and got players like Julio Jones to commit when it wasn’t sexy to go there. I was still a kid at the time, but I still remember the Saban hire. One has to be in awe of what he’s done.

Saban in Tuscaloosa…
- 6 National Championships (7 for him in all, could make it 8 this year).
- 4 Heisman Trophy Winners
No run in history will ever match this, and it’s still going.

Thankfully Paul Finebaum and Neal Vickers mercilessly lambasted Rita. Inappropriate? Maybe. But they did us a service on that one. Probably the only time the Finebaum show actually did anything good for Alabama even if it was inadvertent.

For sure. Not even a Bama fan btw but I’ve enjoyed watching his demeanor this year. Part of it is probably his mellowing with age, but also seems to be he appreciates a team that was thought to be a down year still finding a way to go 12-1. There have been several times where I thought if the same thing had happened during the McCarron years he’d be blowing his stack lol.
It is amazing that one school has had the 2 greatest coaches oat.

I remember thinking Alabama’s bad luck would continue and they’d have to settle again because Saban and Rodriguez now, had turned them down. I believe they were going after Jim Grobe too. Then they came back to Saban and the rest is history.

Imagine if Miami's medical staff clears Drew Brees and he goes there instead of the Saints.
Saban likely stays in Miami and puts on a run there and Saints stay like the Lions.
Hell without that successful run by the Saints, does Benson try to move the team to San Antonio after Goodell becomes commish?
