I remember talking about what a great hire Paul Johnson would be if we could pry him away from Navy. Reprise the wishbone.

Sheer desperation.

Urban probably stays here another year but then takes the Ohio St job.

Or the more likely scenario...Michigan gets their Michigan man, Herbie leaks it, alternate universe Joe Alleva lets Lester go, Saban comes home, tRant never blows up with all the stylized
As replaced with prideful p&g, O eventually replaces "it was the painkillers" Sark, Texas 8&4 remains unchanged, and finally Saban brings multiple trophies home until the inevitable rebuilding year in which tDroppings and local ESPN push for a change bringing on the next one of us hires. The inevitable Saban to Bama happens and the Earth resumes its rotation.

That’s why I think we’re in the wrong timeline; he should have taken the job and CFB would be so much better off.

And maybe Saban would not have been so harsh with that Miami linebacker at practice

Making him cry and everything

Think you nailed it for 90% of Bama fans

Nah. Michigan would have gone after Les "Michigan Man" Miles. LSU would have let him walk without a fight a Saban returns to Baton Rouge.

Weird, because didn't you claim you were done with Alabama just recently while melting?

Were you done with Alabama football then also?

I couldn't imagine how you would have acted in 2000. You don't even know what dark times for Alabama look like. Hell, I was just happy Shula wasn't embarrassing the program off the field.

Odds are it would have been another Franchione scenario. Doesn’t really accomplish much at Bama but pads his resume, but leaps for Florida State, USC, etc, when they became available in 2010.

Schnellenberger was the next man on M. Moore's list according to ELI Gold.

I was there, guy. I was living it. Unless you are old enough to remember "Ears" Whitworth and his three years of suckage I don't think you have me beat in the dark times department.

The message I was sending was clearly received by the team. Sometimes you have to go to great lengths to get people motivated to play up to their potential. Wallace Wade did something similar at the halftime of the '26 Rose Bowl when the Tide was down 12-0 to Washington. He didn't give a speech. The only thing he said was: "They told me southern boys would fight."

Cutting deep is sometimes the best medicine.

Spurrier was also supposedly contacted. He had been at SC one or two years and also turned down Bama, because he said “I already have a job”.

I remember listening to Finebaum back then and he had Joe Scarborough on his radio show. This is the Joe Scarborough from “Morning Joe” show at the time on MSNBC, back when MSNBC was watchable. Scarborough has his law degree from Bama I think and is a huge Bama fan.

I remember, Scarborough saying, “It’s our birthright as Bama fans to be in contention for a National Championship every year, and Mal Moore needs to take a jet to Columbia, SC, get on his knees in front of Spurrier and offer him so much money it’s impossible for him to turn down”.

Thats true. One of the amazing things about Bama is even our worst coaches can post 10 win seasons.

Shula was a bad coach but he stepped in during a really bad time to help. Hell, he turned Cammy into an actual QB for a year or two.

It truly was unbelievable. I wasn't sure if it was unbelievable because Rodriguez turned down a Big 6 job in the SEC, or because Bama had fallen so far, nobody wanted them. Truly amazing how it came together for Bama in the end.

Paul Johnson’s not desperation. He was a damn good football coach.

Tough times and looking back Alabama coming out of NCAA purgatory was not a point of destination. In real-time, I hated the almost RichRod hire. His defenses scared me and I didn't believe in his style of play. When he finally said no it was not a sad day around the old homestead.

But nobody was lining up to come to Tuscaloosa. It seemed we offered Frank Beamer a hundred times but he just couldn't bring himself to leave Blacksburg. He's the guy I really wanted. Nothing fancy, just a lot of meat and potatoes with his style, but that perfectly described Gene Stallings too. About this time the 90s were looking pretty good.
