I don’t think anyone is mistaking State for a blue blood annual title contender but I think it’s silly to assume they can’t get back to the Mullen era norm of consistently decent and occasionally very good. Leach was arguably getting them back to that level in the short term although I do think his recruiting struggles may reared their head down the road (as they pretty much are now, Lebby had to bring in a ton of new starters from the portal. Basically the whole offense and a decent chunk of the defense).
Say what you want about NIL and I’m sure State is far from a leader in that field. The biggest issue has been program instability though. Lebby is the fourth different head coach since 2018. State needs to find its next Sherrill or Mullen that has success and sticks around for 5-10 years. Hopefully Lebby is it. I think he will definitely improve the offense, no idea what to make of his defensive plans though.

I don't know if you are replying to me directly or responding to the thread as a whole, but if you look through this thread, you'll see that I'm on your side in this.

I'm not sure a Nebraska fan has any business writing about other programs underperforming in the modern college football landscape.

Nebraska football started and ended with Tom Osbourne.

Yet they're about to start work on their 8th consecutive losing season.

They would fare better in a smaller conference

It’s fare not fair and we do just fine in the SEC. 6th in wins since 2014. Are we a normal contender for a championship, no, but we fare well. If you wanna say we sick cause we didn’t emphasize football until the 90’s that’s fair

Let me rephrase: Nebraska whooped wholesale arse from 1900 to about 2014.

I think they're going to win 8 games this year.

Not a state fan at all but they are a charter member of the SEC and are slightly below average wins and win% since expansion which is to say there are 5-6 securely behind them. All this despite having the lowest endowment of SEC schools.
They aren't going anywhere.

First order of business for MSU, identify and locate the boosters who fired Leachs staff, hired all their country club buddies, changed the offense to the 1950s run the ball crud, ......and ban them permanently from the football program.
Won’t happen, this is why they are doomed

quote:We had a pretty aggressive defense under Arnette. But I would assume he fired Leach's offensive staff and hired an OC that wanted to turn a run and shoot offensive players into a power run offense. We hired the wrong coordinator if we have to make a lazy hire. I realize it was an emotional time and bad time of year to start a search but damn! What a catastrophe. Knew the moment they announced it.

Actually I think the staff person that was in Arnett’s ear on a lot of those moves (rumored to be Brad Peterson) is no longer with the program.
I kinda feel bad for Arnett. He was forced into a really tough spot that he wasn’t close to ready for. He’s still in his 30’s so a lot of career ahead of him. Just way too soon for him to not only be an SEC head coach, but to be the guy in that particular situation.

quote:I agree with the tough spot part but he could have kept the offensive staff intact and at least the players would fit the offense. If Leach was calling all of the plays and the OC was clueless then that would have been apparent but I think it would have been better than what happened.
