As a SO he played 4 games vs the FBS. His rating was <94.

Get that "serviceable" outta here... You aren't fooling us. LF, may or may not play, but lsu will have a heisman contender on the field Saturday night.

LF is a Heisman contender. He may not win, but he legit is in the conversation. Unless Arden Key gets his 20 sacks, or T. White keeps scoring TDs on D and ST, no one else is in any Heisman consideration.

Matt Mauck had Jimbo Fisher as the OC.

So did Matt Flynn up until his 5th yr SR season.

Etling has nothing.

We saw a guy step up into the pocket a few times and almost lost our minds. We know he didn't learn that at LSU, so we are hoping against hope that he knows how to do other QBish things that he might have learned elsewhere.

I hope he's good. He might be. But, at this point, we have no real reason to get our hopes up.

The guy who took Etlings job then got his job taken and is now one of the back-ups at Florida (Appleby).

What sucks is, Purdue had a championship team that year and he fricked it all up.

Remember this though.... if Jennings had not transferred to ULL, he would likely have been the sub for Harris against Jax State. That would mean Etling would probably not be on the field against MS, which means in practice he was third behind Harris and Jennings. Let that sink in a moment.

I think Jennings transferred because Etling past him on the depth chart

He did show some potential against an FCS team and good for him, though his stats were pretty pedestrian. Wish him well, but wanted to introduce a cautionary note. It is better to be pleasantly surprised when modest expectations are exceeded.

I am not expecting Etling to be All-SEC or anything like that. But, based on the small sample at least, I have much more confidence we may convert a 3rd and 5 with a short pass than I did 2 weeks ago.

And Jacksonville State is certainly not a juggernaut or anything, but I think they could beat at least 4 SEC teams this year. They have a decent D, Roc Thomas is their starting RB, and their QB is a legit read-option QB. That team gave Auburn all they could handle last year.

It's interesting how the standards for becoming the next answer at the QB spot have changed over the years for LSU

2013 - Anthony Jennings throws long TD against SEC opponent Arkansas for win
2014 - Brandon Harris lights up Sun Belt New Mexico State after poor start by Jennings
2016 - Danny Etling goes 6-14 100 yds a TD & a pick vs FCS Jacksonville State after sluggish start by Harris

If Etling bombs this weekend then it's safe to say the season is over and Miles should announce his retirement if he wants to go out peacefully.

6/14 and barely over 100 yds passing. He's the exact same QB as Harris.

Your Super Bowl is all that matters right?

Will they be carrying DE or Les off the field this year after the game?

3 losses? Who cares? We beat A&M! That should be the new motto.

All true, and Etling may end up horrible, but I liked what I saw so far. =)

You really have to explain how a 42% completion rate is "serviceable".

What people are hung up on isn't that he is unknown. It's that he played and was terrible and yet LSU fans think he is good.

He was the starter and looked great at times, but then he was benched cause he started sucking and transferred to an SEC school.... Sounds pretty similar, huh?

Not really.

One guy was replaced by one of the best QBs in college via Baker Mayfield while the other was replaced by Austin Appleby who was himself replaced by David Blough.

What y'all are failing to realize is we've had shitty QB play even against these teams in the past. Etling didn't light shite up Saturday by any means but he showed more QB ability in a few series than Harris has shown in 2-1/2 years. I like that State is his next game. It's a step up in competition and we'll get a much better feel of his skillset.

Really? REALLY? This time 2 years ago, we were about to beat your arse and everyone was begging for Harris to get the start. A week from now, posts were being made with his passer rating of 200 or some shite and how he was the future of LSU football.

Now all of a sudden, he has always been terrible? Say what you will, but I have to hand it to you guys, nobody does short memory and turning on their own quite like LSU.

ETA: Harris was 6/9 for 140 yards, 2 TD's and 1 INT.

Not a good comparison given the opponent and all, but in Mauck's first LSU game, his stat line was: Matt Mauck 15-35-134 1 Int 0 TD
