Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts

Nice, he wasn't getting anywhere near the NFL had he remained at Bama behind Tua though my perspective has changed in recent years about what he did in 16 and 17 but playing under the Riley offense that one season really illuminated his skills as a passer more than what he did under Saban and thus improved his draft stock

Angel Reese makes total sense. Last year during the regular season she was:

29th in scoring
34th in FG%
1st in rebounds
54th in assists
35th in blocks
16th in steals
88th in turnovers
31st in FT%

A'ja Wilson was:
1st in scoring
6th in FG%
2nd in rebounds
39th in assists
1st in blocks
5th in steals
46th in turnovers
15th in FT%

It seems like Wilson was a better all-around player than Reese, but not good enough to be "Sportswoman of the Year" for BET.

I was pulling last year's regular season stats as comparison between Reese and Wilson...but since this is the 2025 award...let's see how they compare so far this season:

Scoring: Wilson 2nd; Reese 39th
FG%: Wilson 20th; Reese (not listed because you must be on pace for 100 FG made for WNBA Stats page)
FT%: Wilson 4th; Reese 39th
Rebounds: Wilson 3rd; Reese 1st
Assists: Wilson 17th; Reese 34th
Steals: Wilson 3rd; Reese 15th
Blocks: Wilson 1st; Reese 66th
Turnovers: Wilson 120th; Reese 126th

It's early in the morning, and I forgot. Thanks for the reminder. I'll try to do less, next time.

No doubt Wilson is the MVP of the league, but this award is clearly not based on those grounds. Hurts isn’t the best player in his league either.

According to BET, "The BET Award for Sportswoman of the Year is given to the best and most successful black female athlete of the previous year. The award was originally titled Best Female Athlete, but was later changed to its current title in 2010."

Yeah, I agree neither Hurts or Reese is the best athlete. Maybe they are considering off-court success, who knows.

There is no way Angel Reese is the best African American representative of women's sports from the past year. Sure she led the WNBA in rebounds but was 38th in PPG.

A'ja Wilson was 2nd in PPG and 3rd in Rebounds per game.

Or Coco Gauff, who won the French open in 2025 and the US Open in 2024. Ranked #2 in singles and #1 in doubles in the world.

Simone Biles, who took home 4 medals in 2024 (3 gold) despite being well past the age that most gymnasts have stopped competing. I'd also say that Biles has definitely been a much better representative of her sport.

Coco would have been a good pick.

Simone Biles - blech. Wants trannies in girls sports and quit on her team in the prior Olympics.

If going the Olympic route, could have taken one of the runners. such as Gabby Thomas.

Maybe not, but Hurts isn't nearly as far behind the leaders and also has some other accolades:

#5 in passer rating among starters
#3 in rushing yards among QBs

Even bigger:
Hurts led his team to the ultimate goal of all NFL players - a Super Bowl ring

Reese is on a team that went 13-27 last year and is currently 2-6.

Reese has some charitable organizations/efforts, so if those are what put her over then I could see that:

quote:

In October 2024, the Reese foundation and digital wallet service, Cash App, announced a partnership to promote financial literacy, with Reese leading Cash App's “That’s Money” campaign. The foundation also announced the renovation of a community basketball court in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

On May 06, 2025, the Foundation and Magic Johnson announced the Wealth Playbook partnership, aimed at improving financial literacy for youth.
