Rankings Week 3

Combination of "How Good Your Team Is" rankings (SP+/FPI), "How Good Your Resume Is" rankings (Strength of Record/Game Control) and "How Dominant Have You Been" (Average Game Win Probability).

A few changes - removed AVGWP, added in an opponent adjusted Net Points Per Play metric ((Net PPP rank * .875)+(SOS *.125)/2)

quote:

SOR: Strength of Record rank. Reflects chance that an average Top 25 team would have team's record or better, given the schedule.

GC: Game Control rank. Reflects chance that an average Top 25 team would control games from start to end the way this team did, given the schedule.

Net Points Per Play metric ((Net PPP rank * .875)+(SOS *.125)/2)

Then mixing recipe is mine, along with the NPPa formula, yea. The data FPI, SP+, SOR, GC comes from ESPN.

That gap between 2 and 3 is fairly big

Yea, Georgia and Alabama are basically the only ones who were expected to be very good (high SP+/FPI) and have actually been very good. They are both Top 5 in every metric. Nobody else is really close to that.

I'm too busy trying to de-jinx Will Smith right now to worry about the Dawgs diddlers.

Impressive that the Hawgs have finally jumped up enough on field to offset a lot of the preseason data for SP+/FPI to land in the top 5. Going to be an interesting game this week for sure.

Why is OU's strength of record so high?

4 home games and the best teams they've played are Nebraska and WVU.

Because it's based on FPI and FPI has Nebraska #26 and WVU #29, plus Tulane #77.

So, there are only 26 undefeated teams left, which means they are somewhere in the middle of all of those. In front of SMU, Michigan, Baylor, Maryland, Kentucky, Ole Miss but behind Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State.

So Alabama...
Played #12 on the road
Gets #9 this weekend at home
Plays #4 in a few weeks
Still has #23, #29, and #33 left.
If they get past all that, the only team above them (most likely) in the SECCG.

Well damn.
