Athletically I give it to Bo but only slightly at best. Almost a wash.

Cmon. Dupree is not even in the discussion of greatest athlete of all time by any one in any show or casual discussion ever. Yes, I have seen the 30/30. High school phenom, some flashes of brilliance as a RB at times. That is about the beginning and end of it.

Neither. Boobie Dixon.

One other thing about the best RB (lets just ignore the rest for a moment).
Dupree played 6 seasons between the college and pros.
< 3,000 all purpose yards
26 TDs
Bo played 8 seasons. However, he missed most all of his junior year at AU and only played half a season (7-10 games) each year in the NFL.
> 8,000 all purpose yards
65 TDs
Now, you can speculate about Dupree being the GOAT due to HS brilliance and a few flashes of greatness afterwards, but his actual accomplishments after high school were weak. And Bo is not even statistically impressive in the NFL because he only played just over 2 full season in the NFL.
Oh yeah as a professional (counting Dupree in the USFL as well):
YPC
Dupree: 3.7 (2 TDs)
Bo: 5.4 (20 TDs)
And they each played about the same number of professional games as well (around 35).

quote:Bo had heart - Dupree didn't. I really don't remember that much about Bo in his Freshman year as we were more honed in on Hershel but he rose very quickly in his soph and junior years. Bo is the most incredible athlete I have ever seen.
Any old timers on here remember the class of 82 which produced
Dupree in his Freshman year had good numbers and seemed like he padded them somewhat in his first bowl game but he never learned to practice or work that hard. Doesn't matter how much potential you have if you waste it. Bo is the clear winner here.

This is some of the most biased and out of context use of statistics I have ever seen.
Bo Jackson played 4 full seasons in college and 4 pro season
Marcus Dupree Played onlyl 1 full college season and his pro seasons were after sitting out of the game for at least a year or more at a time
Marcus Dupree's only full college season was his freshamn season and had these stats
163 attempts 1,393 yards 8.5 yards/carry 12 Touchdowns as a freshman
What made these FRESHMAN stats even more impressive is that Marcus Dupree only was given 12 carries for 20 yards through the FIRST THREE GAMES.
Dupree also holds the Fiesta Bowl Record for rushing yards in a game. He set that record playing only the first half of the game. He was benched due to being out of shape and in poor conditioning. Barry Schwitzer said he would have easily gotten more yards if he didn't get overweight during the break.
Marcus Dupree's second season resulted with him having a concussion in his 4th game of the season and not returning to the team after that. He didn't play another down of football.
Of the 4 pro seasons you mentioned
One season was included in which he had less than 20 carries after it was cut short when he had a horrible knee injury. Medicine wasn't like today where you could come back.
Two seasons you included were after he spent 5 years out of the game and hovering about 100 pounds overweight.
ETA: Dupree broke the high school touchdowns record as well

Bo Jackson is clearly one of the top 3 athletes of all time with a good argument of being #1. Marcus Dupree is definitely within shouting distance to him when he can avoid acting like he was in a cheeseburger eating contest.

Bullcrap! He sucked against UF 3 of 4 years and took himself out of the game his senior year because of a thigh bruise? Bo was a thoroughbred not a work horse.
I would take MD as a pure talent but give me Herschel every day over those two.

I guess we will truly never know. After watching the 30 for 30 "The Best That Never Was", I went through my large collection of football cards and found two rookie Marcus Dupree cards. Wonder how much I could get for them now.

You can never know who was better because Dupree never panned out, but I will say that Dupree did things that Bo never did. 230 rushing yards in a half, ran a kickoff back the first time he touched a football in a high school game as an 8th grader, etc.

I don't know why, but Dupree sounds like he would be a good fit for the old school raiders.

Talked with many old-school high schoolers in Louisiana and Mississippi, and they all get a devastating look if you mention Dupree. Every single one of them who saw him in person claims he's the greatest natural talent they've ever seen, period. They all wonder what could have been with such a sad knowing that it never came true.

The only thing I remember from duprees 30 for 30 is that he ran the 100 meters in 9.5. I don't believe just because it doesn't seem possible for a guy that size.

Football athlete yes without a doubt, Alabama has also produced two of the greatest track athletes in Olympic history.

Bo was not even close to the greatest of all time.
You hit Bo hard a few times, and he would pull himself out of the game. In 1985 Dale Jones and Company put Bo on the sidelines in Knoxville. Bo "didn't feel well".
The same thing happened at Ole Miss. There was a D-lineman (can't remember his name) for the Rebs who made Bo decide "he didn't feel well" in that game either.
Bo was good, until he got that arse popped hard a couple of times.

And Bo did a million things Dupree never did and did them better. You want 230 yards in a half? Well, Bo went for 240 midway through the 3rd quarter in the 1983 IB against a top 20 bama team on about 12 carries. Then a tornado basically shut the game down and neither team scored another point from there on out.
Bo also went for 200+ against a top 5 undefeated UGA team in Athens.
Bo also went for 200 plus and set an NFL record against the Seattle Seahawks.
Bo also STILL holds the record for YPC for an NFL RB and most 90 yard runs in a career.
Seriously, comparing Dupree to Bo is VERY one sided.

So we are camparing a fatass who played one and half seasons and then chased money in the USFL to one of the greatest athletes in sports history?
ok.
