I've heard they like him but like Freeman better.

Could have something to do with Mason more than likely will be named our DC very soon.

The word we got was he wanted assurance that he'd be allowed to leave without penalty if he was offered a P5 HC position that he wanted to take and that was being ironed out. Could be total BS, tho. You know how that goes with coaching rumors.

Not all the time, for instance, Aranda was retained by O when Miles was fired. If dude does a good job, he may even could put his name in the hat as a potential replacement.

That is possible. But like I said, a gamble.

True, but every coaching career move is a gamble honestly.

If you're an up and coming DC wanting to be a head coach, what is a better move currently?

There's a thread on the Coaching Changes board with a link saying that LSU has narrowed it's DC choices down to Marcus Freeman or Barry Odom.

The guy seems to be getting tons of hype or press where he is at. He has no ties to the south. I think we as SEC fans value the SEC jobs more than the rest of the country does.

know Freeman is the hot name right now

No doubt but folks gotta remember he had 10 starters returning this year (9 of em seniors with 4 redshirts)

All that experience can make a lot of folks look like a hot name.

He won't have that luxury at LSU or any other P5 school that puts a lot of kids in the NFL.

I think everyone values their jobs a little more than they should but its undeniable that there are only a handful of places where you can compete for a championship and vault yourself into the conversation for big name jobs and most of those exist in the SEC.

I think LSU has 10 starters on D returning. Everybody except Cox, I believe.

Seniors? Half of them redshirts?

Highly doubtful

Cox and Stevens will be gone for sure. Other than that I think we should have everyone back. After what we saw out of them this year, it remains to be seen if that's a good thing or not.

Eta: DT Glen Logan hasn't announced what he's gonna do yet. It may be 9 if he decides to declare.

I hope we hire Freeman, and that he's all they say. A good defense is essential. I think we all took defense for granted at LSU, until now.

Honestly, objectively, despite all the player attrition and injuries, if LSU had played "standard, average LSU" D, we're looking at 8-2 or 9-1. The offense was plenty good enough to beat Miss State and Mizzou, and I think had we stayed close longer against Auburn and A&M we'd eventually have broken through. Bama would have been the only sure loss.

Crazy times at LSU. We finally figured out how to play offense, and the defense disappears.

Yes, Freeman is only 34. He'll be a college head coach very soon.

Rarely defensive coordinator do well as a HC nowadays. It is an offense league now.

Potentially.

Not saying its not a good hire but I'm always wary of DCs of Defensive minded HCs. Is it HIS defense or the HCs?

Kinda like UF's position with our OC, is he really any good or is it all Mullen?

You wanna get me worried? Give ol Jim Leonhard a call at Wiskey

But why would LSU want a one year DC. If he comes in and has a good year he is gone.

Anytime you seek out a top level coordinator you are taking that risk. You do it though because it beats the alternative of making a mediocre hire.

Maybe he will replace Ed Orgeron as the HC?

Orgeron has to get these hires right.

This seems like it would be a pretty good hire to me.

No...

Ed seems to have fixed the offense, I think 30 pts is a given vs anyone not named Bama as long as we're reasonably healthy. The problem is we gave up over 40 5 times in 10 games.

If he fixes the defense, Orgeron is golden again. If he doesn't, he's not going to be viewed in high regard.

I believe he is also being considered at Auburn.
