Glass would hit and Jackson would answer. What a game this was.

Gerald Glass is a HS coach in MS now and was interviewed on the radio the other day where they discussed this rivalry

I was a high school Junior when this took place. Still the greatest basketball game I've ever watched. At that time I loved Glass and OM, and my best friend was a huge Chris Jackson, he was from Gulfport, fan. We'd argue non stop on who was better. Good times.

I remember that game. Great memory. A year or two later I remember Robert Horry being assigned to guard Shaq - seems outrageous now.

I used to love to watch Chris wave off teammates and break a 1-on-4 full court press all by himself. His ballhandling skills were amazing.

TNP,
Not sure of you're age, and I may be showing mine, but as a little kid I remember Johnny Neumann of Ole Miss, LSU's Pistol Pete, Travis Grant from WKU I think, and Dwight 'Bo' Lamar from USL.
The Pistol was my idol. But you know I don't really remember if Neumann ever played against him?

I was a Jr in High School. Out on a double date with my best friend and our two girlfriends. Got a 12-pack of beer and parked at the end of Quail Run in Eastover (Jackson) and drank beer with the radio on listening to the entire game.

Then went out to WC Don's to listen to Will and the Bushmen on stage.

Good times. Good times.

Absolutely. I loved watching him.

The problem was he was too good (and so was Shaq). Dale Brown could take the original Dream Team and lose to Canada, then turn around and take 5 nobodies to the Final Four. He was a character.

Exactly. Although he did go 31-2 in March '81 going into the Indiana game in the Final Four. Unfortunately, Rudy Macklin broke his hand and was not effective at all, and we lost.
Now, the 1986 Final Four team did have a few big names - John Williams from L.A., Ricky Blanton, Don Redden, Anthony and Nikita Wilson. Unfortunately Pervis Ellison took over in the second half vs the Tigers in that FF game.

In 1987, Brown DID take an underrated team to the Elite Eight, where Bob Knight banged his fist on the scoring table and did not even get a WARNING, much less a technical - led directly to their one-point victory over the Tigers - who would have played in the Final Four right down the road in the Dome had we won.

1989-90-91 was a different story. We were STACKED but could only get as far as the Sweet 16.
Shaq, Stanley Roberts, Chris Jackson, Harold Boudreaux, Maurice Williamson, Vernel Singleton
wowwwww.

There are a lot of freak athletes playing college basketball these days, but I think the teams from the 80's and early 90's would crush most of today's good teams. The basketball skill level of some of the guys from that era was off the charts.

Glass did not miss when he had an open look and if he got position inside it was an automatic 2.

At times, Jackson was literally unguardable. He could get a look anytime he wanted and if he didn't, he would just hit a shot with 2-3 guys in his face.

Today you have guys that whey they get a mid-range look they couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat

Both were great players.

Gerald Glass was smooth.

Glass had a smooth shot. Short follow through but he had such a feel for his stroke it just seemed effortless.

Chris Jackson looks like an RC car zipping around a driveway with his handle and quickness, and then just a robotically pure motion that was just as sharp as a razor. Finely honed.

What a great game that must've been.

I was a junior in high school and went up to Ole Miss for South Seas, I think. A buddy of mine got us tickets at the top of the arena. the best game I've ever been to even though LSU lost. I'll never forget it!

Nope. JN was a freshman(and thereby ineligible) when Pete was a Sr. He did score 63 against LSU the year after Pete left and averaged just over 40 points per game for the Rebs. He then became the first "Hardship Case" in professional basketball, leaving school to join the ABA. He and Pete did eventually meet in the NBA several years later but Neumann was never the pro dynamo that Pete was. Good player but not NBA top 50 good as Pete was.

Yes it was. For some reason Dale refused to double-team Glass most of the night and it came back to bite him. Jackson scored 50+ but actually missed some shots he normally made down the stretch. Great entertainment all the way.
